Rudder weight ? (Moved from TradeMart)

Post by butchpilot170 »

Hi ! Anybody know why there is such a heavy "weight " inside the top of the rudder in my '51 170A ?

It's the counter balance. Helps prevent flutter and makes the control surfaces feel not as heavy.
Elevator and ailerons have them too.

There are specs as to how to balance the control surfaces.

Butch, I believe that is correct for the 170B but you indicated your plane is a 170A. I don't believe the 170 and the 170A have the balance weight in the elevator. I am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct for the elevator. I'm not sure on the rudder...I think they are the same.

There is a 4 lb balance weight in all rudders of all models 170.
