The M-20 Air/Oil Separator by Ken Morrow, Idaho Area Rep
THE FOLLOWING DATA WAS COMPILED ON MY AIRCRAFT, A CESSNA 170B, ON THE TRIP TO AND FROM THE CESSNA 170 CONVENTION IN ANCHORAGE ALASKA, IN JUNE AND JULY 2000. I HAVE APPROX. 75.0 HRS. ON THE M-20, MODEL 300, AIR / OIL SEPARATOR SINCE INSTALLATION. THE AIRCRAFT HAS A FULL PRESSURE COWEL WITH TIGHT SEALS AND BAFFLES, BARTONE EXHAUST PIPES WITH THE ORIGINAL EXHAUST COWEL HOLES PLUGGED. THIS ALONE REDUCED THE OIL TEMPERATURE APPROX. 5 TO 8 DEGREES F, AND THE CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE REDUCTION OF 10 DEGREES C. MY AIRCRAFT ALSO HAS THE 3/4 TO 1 INCH LIP ON THE BOTTOM OF THE LOWER COWEL.

WITH THE M-20AIR /OIL SEPARATOR INSTALLED, 8 QUARTS OF W100 AEROSHELL OIL, A CAN OF AV-BLEND,THE WINTER COWEL PLUG IN FRONT OF THE OIL PAN, WE FLEW THE AIRCRAFT TO ALASKA. THE DAY WE LEFT NAMPA IDAHO THE GROUND TEMPERATURE ON T.O. WAS 78 DEGREES F, IN CLIMB, OIL TEMPERATURE READ 185 DEGREES F, AT CRUISING ALTITUDE OF 6500 FEET WITH O.A.T. BETWEEN 55 AND 65 DEGREES F, THE OIL TEMPERATURE RAN AROUND 170 TO 180 DEGREES F, . WITH O.A.T. @ 40 TO 50 DEGREES F, AT WHAT EVER ALTITUDE OIL TEMPERATURE RAN 160 TO 170 DEGREES F, . AT THIS POINT I REDUCED THE OIL LEVEL IN THE ENGINE TO 7 QUARTS, LETTING IT BURN DOWN TO 6 QUARTS IN ORDER TO GET THE OIL TEMPERATURE BACK UP TO 170 TO 180 DEGREES F,. AT NO TIME IN CLIMB DID THE OIL TEMPERATURE EXCEED 185 DEGREES F. NOW WHEN THE GROUND TEMPERATURE GOT TO BE AROUND 85 TO 95 DEGREES F, I REMOVED THE OIL PAN COWELING COVER PLUG, INSTALLED 7.5 QUARTS OF OIL AND THE T.O. AND CLIMB OIL TEMPERATURE WENT TO 200 TO 205 DEGREES F, AT CRUISING ALTITUDE OF 7500 FEET, WITH A O.A.T OF 70 DEGREES F, OIL TEMPERATURE DROPPED BACK TO 180 DEGREES F, AFTER ABOUT 25 TO 30 MINUTES.

ON JULY 30th WITH FOREST FIRES IN THE AREA HERE AT HOME, WE HEADED OUT FOR JOHSON CREEK AROUND 6:45 AM. THE GROUND TEMPERATURE WAS 82 DEGREES F, T.O. AND CLIMB THE OIL TEMPERATURE WENT TO 210 DEGREES F, AT 9000 FEET CRUISING ALTITUDE, O.A.T. WAS 80 DEGREES F, AND THE OIL TEMPERATURE RAN AROUND 195 TO 200 DEGREES F. BY THE WAY WE DID'NT MAKE IT TO JOHNSON CREEK FOR BREAKFAST, BECAUSE THE SMOKE GOT TO THICK, SO WE TURNED AROUND AND HEADED HOME . ON OUR GRADUAL DESENT BACK TO NAMPA THE OIL TEMPERATURE STAYED AROUND 190 TO 195 DEGREES F, WE WERE RUNNING WITH 8 QUARTS OF OIL.

I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE M-20 AIR / OIL SEPARATOR THE WAY IT OPERATES, BY ALLOWING YOU TO RUN WITH A FULL 8 QUARTS OF OIL , AND NONE BLOWING OUT ON THE AIRCRAFT BELLY. I WIPED THE BELLY DOWN THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY AUGUST 5TH, 2000, SINCE THE SEPERTOR WAS INSTALLED AND THERE WAS VERY LITTLE DIRT AND GRIME TO CLEAN OFF, CONSIDERING WE WERE IN AND OUT OF QUITE A FEW GRAVEL AND DIRT STRIPS. NO OILY GRIME ON THE TAIL WHEEL SPRING EITHER.

REMOVE #1 CYLINDER ROCKER COVER, DRILL A 7/16" HOLE IN CENTER OF LOWER HALF OF COVER. PLACE A AN315-7 NUT OVER THE HOLE AN WELD NUT TO ROCKER COVER. CLEAN THREADS OF NUT, REPAINT ROCKER COVER.

INSTALL A MS20852-4, 90 DEGREE FITTING ,WITH JAM NUT, WASHER AND O'RING PACKING. LEAVE FITTING LOOSE UNTIL LINE IS ATTACHED. REINSTALL ROCKER COVER WITH NEW GASKET.

INSTALL BOTTOM OF M-20 AIR / OIL SEPARATOR RETURN LINE APPROX. 4 INCHES ABOVE FITTING IN #1 CYLINDER ROCKER COVER.


INSTALL A NEW HOLE IN REAR BAFFLE APPROX. 4 TO 4.5 INCHES HIGHER THAN ORIGINAL BREATHER HOLE. INSTALL A 3/4" I.D. RUBBER GROMMET IN NEW REAR BAFFLE HOLE. INSTALL ALUMINUM FOIL TAPE, 3 PLYS OVER FRONT AND BACK OF THE ORIGINAL BREATHER HOLE. THIS IS A QUICK PATCH AND IT WORKS.


SHORTEN THE ORIGINAL BREATHER LINE AS NEEDED. CLEAN LINE INSIDE AND OUT WITH M.E.K.. INSTALL 2ea , 3/4" O.D. 3 INCHES LONG TUBING PIECES, OVER SHORTENED ENDS OF THE ORIGINAL TUBING. USE J B WELD EPOXY TO SECURE THE 2ea, 3 INCH LONG TUBING PIECES TO THE ORIGINAL TUBING. INSTALL M-20 AIR / OIL SEPARATOR THROUGH GROMMET IN REAR BAFFLE, SECURE WITH 2ea 3/4" I.D. 4.5 INCH LONG RUBBER HOSES, SECURED WITH 4 WORM GEAR CLAMPS.


FABRICATE A 1/4" ALUMINUM LINE APPROX. 16 INCHES LONG WITH A AN819-4 SLEEVE, AN818-4 NUT, AND FLARE END OF TUBING. INSTALL ON FITTING ON ROCKER COVER, MEASURE WHERE YOU WANT TO BEND LINE, REMOVE LINE,BEND AS NEEDED. REINSTALL LINE , ADJUST AS NEEDED, MARK WHERE YOU WANT TO BEND LINE TO THE OIL OUTLET OF AIR / OIL SEPARATOR, REMOVE LINE BEND AS NEEDED AND CUT TO LENGTH. REINSTALL 1/4 " LINE , SECURE WITH A 2 INCH LONG 1/4" RUBBER HOSE AND 2 WORM GEAR CLAMPS. ADJUST LINE AS REQUIRED, TIGHTEN JAM NUT ON 90 DEGREE FITTING. INSTALL OIL LEVEL TO 8 QUARTS. COMPLY WITH ENGINE RUN-UP AND LEAK CHECK.


ENJOY A CLEAN OIL FREE BELLY AND LOWER OIL TEMPERATURE.


MAKE LOG BOOK ENTRY AND COMPLETE FAA 337 FORM I/A/W STC# SA02033AT DATED 11-1999, REVISED 2-9-2000, USING INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS AND DRAWING # 304, DATED 9-27-99.
CONTINUED AIRWORTHINESS INSTRUCTION FOUND IN INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. WEIGHT AND BALANCE NEGLIGIBLE.
