Hello from New Member

Greetings to All!

Just bought a new-to-me 1956 170B, N3457D. I am very excited and looking forward to many great adventures. I have been out of aviation for the past fifteen years, but now I am back and I can't wait to get back into the full swing of things. I used to own a Champ, and I have about twenty hours in a 170A. I have flown many other types as well--180s, Stinsons, Cubs, 140's, Citabrias, Taylorcrafts, Ryan PT22, etc. I am also an instructor.

Actually I haven't even picked up my plane yet. It is in Northern Ohio and I am in South Louisiana. I will let you know how that flight goes next month.

I am looking for a local hangar and i have a question: What is the tallest part of the plane, and how tall is it. I assume it is the tip of the prop while in rotation. Anyone have that measurement? The plane is on 8.00 tires.

Welcome Greg!!!

You are going to have a lot of fun with the 170 and this forum will give you lots of advice most of which you will find quite helpful along with many interesting and helpful members.

I am hopeful that you will be able to help many of us by translating the Louisiana bayou speak that Ole Gar (Flyguy) puts on here. He gets drinking that St. Polly Girl beer and becomes incoherent. Please help.

I will do my best to translate for Ol' Gar, but I won't make any promises. My kin were from near where Ol' Gar lives but none of them ever talked like that. And Breaux Bridge is a short hop over the woods for me, so I will be sure to visit. Thanks for the invite. I'll go ahead and ask forgiveness ahead of time for all of the questions I will be asking. Hopefully I will learn fast and be able to contribute something back soon.

With the prop in the vertical position, a standard 76" prop upper-tip is 8-feet, 6-inches from the floor. That is the highest item on the airplane in the 3-point attitude, unless you have the original narco VOR antenna, which adds another few inches.

The length is 25 feet and the wingspan is 36 feet. Hope that helps.

Hey Greg Welcome!!!!!!

Don't worry I don't know anything either and I know you will pass me by in short order but that's o.k. I just try to enjoy life everyday and part of my day is reading post here. I have learned alot about alot.

What I do know is there are alot very wonderful and interesting people here that you will come to love and enjoy. For less than the price a good steak for you and your wife you can belong to the club and enjoy all year long

As far as Ron's "talking".....well I met him and I still think I didn't understand 1/2 of what he said nice guy though.

Well W, Slow talking is a southern thing as well as certain other things. Got a visit from Bruce a few Sundays ago while he was is Lake Charles doing Traning--Wanted to see a gator. Well drove around the lake and sure enough saw one had to point it out a while. Bruce's comment "looks like a log". Well it does you just have to know you don't walk across them. Big teeth on one end and can out run a quarter horse for 40 yds. So if he just lays there something for dinner just might try to cross.
Bruce, she is still there it is her place in the lake and every afternoon going home she's waiting. I'll get you a picture with a camera in lieu of phone and send it to you.

As far as ol Gar's language I have to read them 3-4 times before I can figure some of it. I think some of that is from his up bringing in AZ-MO-CA. Mexico, and working in Saudi and a little of the St. Pauli girl.

W, next time we meet I'll talk a little S L O W E R so it may sound right. Like Southerners don't talk slow enough now!!!

Ron can't wait to see the picture. Hard to believe they are that fast. Other than the gators about the hull of the battleship we had dinner on while at the Wilmington NC convention, it might have been the only one I've seen in person, not in captivity.

Back to flying. Greg, If you have plane/time before you pick up your bird Fly in/stop by we'll BS big time. I see it'll be next month before you go get yours. I am in the Directory. Will be good to get some more southern support(that means I need all the help I can get). I'd add-- Parker is not exactly a real cajun name. Of course neither is Kyle Wolfe til he says Wol Fey' Ron

Welcome to the group Greg. And CONGRATULATIONS on buying your 170. Not many 1956 models around. That's just about as new as they get. I can't say I've ever seen one.

Contrary to the ignoramus the Cajun Connection may appear to be , you reall should link up with him. Ron is a wealth of information as well as a real gentleman. He and Connie are good folks. This group starts with the planes but ends with the people.

Welcome Greg, You need not be a serious flier to enjoy the 170. It is one of the most economical planes to fly. One of the best groups to belong to for info.
