Straight Tail on floats ??

Post by Jimmy M. »

Hi Folks,
Has anyone ever seen a straight tail 172 on floats ?? Maybe in the northern states or Alaska?
I want to put mine on floats but I think the factory float kits were only available in 1960 and later.
I've got the float kit installed but I'm going to have to generate a little paperwork. If I can find one it'll make it a little easier.
thanks......................Jim

Jim,

there's a guy up here in Anchorage named Cliff who's a DAR at a shop called "Floats Alaska". I don't have his number off hand, but I'm sure you could Google it. A couple of years ago he mentioned to me that Wipaire had some float that they somehow got approved for the early 172. I don't remember the whole story, but it had to do with our early serial numbers being included on their installation drawings for one specific float. I don't know which float model, or even if it was included on an STC or just some "approved data" to use for a field approval.

Give him a call and see if he can help you out... and keep me posted if you find anything else out.

Floats Alaska is now known as Seaplanes North and can be found at:

An originality nut (mostly) for the right reasons. ;)
