Prop preference

If you were to purchase a new prop for a 0300D what would be your choice ? Sensenich at $2300 new or McCauley at $2950 new both std pitch.
Our 172/170 or a 171 is known as tweener

MaCauley because it's cheaper and there is a slight performance gain with the MaCauley according to the 170 performance charts.

Of course the charts I'm talking about might be slightly different prop models than your looking at.

This is a good question, anyway what are the performance specs for the varous FP props. Should the DM props be replaced with the MDM when the the DM is no longer servicable.

Bruce, you might have missed the prices he was quoted.

The official performance numbers give a very slight edge to the McCauley, (probably due to length...it's 2" longer when props are new... not necessarily so if in used condition)... but I'm not certain it's actually realized in the real world. (Cessna and McCauley have long had a "cooperative" agreement, even before Cessna officially bought out McCauley.)
But Sensenich is a good prop and the most likely reason for it's performance numbers is its about 2" shorter. That might be nice on rough strips where FOD is a problem.

See the Owner's Manual / AFM for performance differences. Under Standard Conditions the McCauley gives about 10% better takeoff performance over a Sensenich. (1820' vs 2020' over a 50' obstacle.) Cruise performance is supposedly the same.

Your right George I misread the prices :cry: I believe you meant to indicate the Sensenich not the McCauley is 2" shorter (you got it right the second mention)

I've flown with a Sensenich on my plane and for an hour or two and for that short time I really didn't notice much difference but perhaps had I keeped it on longer I would have.

Hmmm what would I do? I'll spend 171TD's money and get a McCauley. :)

I'd buy a used prop for half, or less, and buy gas and beer with the savings.

Also, I'd buy Mogas and even more beer!

A new prop will seldom work a thousand dollars better than a good used prop, and if you knock a chunk out of a used prop you're only out half as much.

After all, the rest of the airplane, and engine, is all used parts.

So your know running a mixture of MOGAS and beer. What does that raise the alcohol level to?

:D

Good points about the used equipment though BL and probably the path I'd take even using 171TD's money.

Where did you find the McCauley for $2950? Last time I checked around , which was a few years ago, they were $3500-4000.

The 6 hole flange is much less than the 8 hole. I think that is why your prop would be 3,500
