If your photo of the claimed original is a '52 then yes, that is Lima Tan.

Glad to help Dave. It's amazing to me that after looking at every detail of this plane for over a decade there are still surprises like this notch/cutout that few of us --myself included--were ever aware of. In this case it's probably because few aircraft were sold with the optional gyro panel. Thanks for posting this detail.

The '52 panel you pictured seems to have two different shades of tan -- one on the main gyro panel cover and another lighter shade on the side panels. I thought the center cover might be "Dark India" which would be correct for your '51 model but it doesn't seem to match other pictures of Dark India posted here.

Gary, flying my 170A last weekend I noticed I have the notched panel. I never noticed cause the compass covers it. 8O

Interesting Bruce. These holes in the panel are now showing up everywhere! It's easy to see how one could mistake this notch for some previous owner's hacking up the panel. Do you have the compass cover with the light conductor behind it?

Gary, I have the complete compass installation shown on the gyro instrument installation option page of the 170A IPC, which is the same as the 170B page.

Nice. If you ever get a chance — maybe at annual time — could you post a picture of the light conductor with dimensions? I’m really curious as to what it actually looks like and would like to duplicate it.

Gary, removed my compass cover today. There is no special light conductor in there. The compass mounted in mine looked like it has a light socket though I didn't investigate closer as it was to hot in the hanger. I know there is no wire from my compass. I would bet if it does indeed have a socket, it is not an original model compass to my 170A.

I just carefully compared IPCs, the 170A figure 60 Venturi Gyro Installation to the 170B Figure 76 Gyro Panel Kit, and guess what? The 170A IPC shows no light conductor. So my installation is not missing parts. Cessna probably made an attempt to transmit more light by adding the light conductor in the 170B model kit.

I am a little confused as I thought we were talking about the whisky compass. I still have the cover from my instrument panel [which I removed a number of years ago] and it has that slot in the top of it. But my whisky compass has a small barrel hole about 3/8 in at the top of it. This allows a small light fitting to be used. I will know more next week as I am totally replacing my whisky compass as the compensator is shot and I haven’t any paper work for it.

No, you just haven't kept up.

Dave asked about the slot in the top of his panel. The slot is there because his panel is from, either his plane or another donor, that had the Gyro Kit installed. This kit required the whiskey compass to be moved from the standard location to that centered just above the panel. The slot was intended to let light from the panel illuminate the compass above.

Here is a picture of this installation in my 170A.
