C170 vs C140 tailwheel bracket

Post by n3833v »

I am asking if anybody knows if the 140 tailwheel bracket is the same as the 170 bracket. Mine according to McCurtains parts disk for my 48 ragwing is # 72-0512125[fig 20-72]. Looking at pictures, it looks the same. Mine is steel and never updated.
Thanks for the info.

I don't know if this is the same part as the 120/140,even though it looks the same. The 120/140 fuselage may be a bit narrower.
The later 170's had a different bracket, which has two "fingers" extending forward on each side. My ragwing is fitted with this later finger-style bracket.
I was just looking at these parts in my IPC, my later bracket has the early-style "stiffener assembly" consisting of a channel top & bottom (figure 20-91 & -92, p/n's 0442127 & 0442124) & 2 bolts/nuts to clamp the tailspring leafs & the very aft end of the tailspring bracket all together. It should have the later set-up,which is a U-bolt. What brought this to light was the fact that one of the bolts broke. After replacing the bolt, I looked at a B model & realized it had a different set-up. By rights,I should buy & install the U-bolt set-up,to match the later bracket. But I remembered & searched out a forum thread that addressed U-bolt replacement ("tailspring stiffener bolt",in the Hangar forum), seems like all the parts places are pretty proud of their U-bolts & charge for them accordingly. So I'll probably just stay with what I got. Two new bolts & locknuts were only about 2 bucks.

I don't have the part numbers with me but the brackets for the 120/140 are different than the early 170. First they are aluminum and the 170 is steel. Also the 170 bracket is slightly contoured at the bottom and the 120/140 bracket is flat. If you need I can provide you with the part number for the 120/140. nick
