Has anyone done the B&C Specialties BC433-H alternator conversion from the standard generator? I bought the STC from Classic Aero, LLC, which provides everything including the voltage regulator and wiring. Just looking for any personal experience or gotchas that anyone has come across.

Hi Jud
I bought a rebuilt engine for my 54 170B from a gentleman who had rebuilt it for his home built. 70 hours on it now and runs great.
It came with BC-433 alternator and regulator. The FAA held me up for 3 months for approval despite the fact that I supplied all the paperwork that this alternator had been approved for many Continental engines.
I had 1 problem at about 10 hours. I called the company and told them I had no charge and I had gone by their troubleshooting checklist and it appeared to be a faulty relay on the regulator. They sent me a new relay and all is well now.
I am advertising my old run out engine in the next flypaper. It will come with a working 35 amp generator and the original style starter.

Hope to see all at Penn Yan 2020

just received my package for Classic Aero. I'm pretty impressed with their package deal, it looks to be complete with all wiring, gaskets, instructions. I'll try to detail the install for a possible write up but if anyone else is looking to get away from a Generator and convert to an alternator, this is looking better all the time.

rupertjl,

I’d be interested in the details of your alternator conversion.

Also, I went to the Classic Aero web page and there isn’t much info on the alternator kit/STC. Where can I find more?

Doug,

It’s a B&C alternator so you can find out about the alternator itself on the B&C website but the person who owns the STC is the Luscombe Endowment which is basically Doug Combs from Classic Aero, LLC. I’d recommend calling them, they have an info email they sent out explaining what their complete kit is and lends itself better than putting up a store like ad on their website.
