it seems to be the consensus of this board
that Nuvite Polish is the best for aluminum planes

it comes in 3 grades
what is the best type to buy
and is the best way to use it?
i have no heavy corrosion on my plane

But I only have the struts and a few other parts to do.

It actually comes in a bunch of grades. I am a novice polisher but so far I have used mostly F7 to start(F9 on the really bad spots). I plan on using C next and then finishing up with S. It is a long process but worth it. The perfect polish website has a ton of good info on polishing.

NuVite is the good stuff, and a Cyclo polisher will help you get the best results. No secrets really... just lots of time and desire!
As has been said before, though: the 170 is such a pretty plane, how could you not want to polish it!??!

Nuvite is great stuff. On 35D I started with 6 then 7. C, A, S. Now to keep polished I just use C and S. Rusty.

First flight this spring. Two hours to buff it up.

I always think polishing is great and looks good, but in the 60's when I drove truck, I found it so much better to have painted wheels to clean than to polish aluminium wheels. It is nice that mine is a 48 so no polishing of wings and only wash and clean the painted surfaces. Kudos to all that spend mega time polishing so I can enjoy.

my cyclo-polisher has the two rubber rotary 'pods'
to these a rubber cap is stretched over the pods that have velcro on the other side
then all the accessory polishing pads can quickly attached to the pod
what is the part number for this rubber cap with the velcro on it?

ie what kind of buffer and how you apply the polish etc.

i masked off the 'N' numbers before I polished
i'd like to make a template out of a thin rigid plastic or other material
so i could simply place it over the N number and just tape the out'r edges
what would be a good material to use for this
my 'N' numbers are 13.5 x 20''

i traced out the 'N' numbers today on tracing paper
plan to cut them back 3/8" so a single piece of masking tape
will secure them down for future polishing.
i'm still trying to figure out what would be the best
material to use
plexiglass is too brittle to cut
so am thinking about using a piece of vinyl
which would lay nicely and be durable enough to
withstand the polisher pads etc.
how did the rest of you do your planes?
