Headliner Wire supports
I'm looking to install a new headliner in my 1948 C-170. The headliner that is in it now was made up by the previous owner and obviously not original. The problem is the support wires, Cessna part number 0511011-3, -20, -9 and -21 are not there!! Does anyone know whether these wires are available or could be re-manufactured using some other material. thanks

ordinary, steel, (gas) welding rod should work fine.

I was thinking the same...... Plenty of that stuff around, thanksgahorn wrote:ordinary, steel, (gas) welding rod should work fine.
Re: Headliner Wire supports
If you use stainless steel welding rod...it won't ever rust and stain your headliner.
Another solution is to use fiberglass fly-rod material cut to length.

Welding rod is too short. Go to a steel supply outfit and buy two ten foot lengths of eighth inch stainless rod. You will use it all. Works perfect.

OK thanks. I was looking at it last night and I will need it all for sure. The past-past owner removed everything!! , no mounts, no rods - nothing. It will take me some extra effort to install the stock headliner again.cmsusllc wrote:Welding rod is too short. Go to a steel supply outfit and buy two ten foot lengths of eighth inch stainless rod. I managed to find some from a 52 model. The 48 is slightly different, anyway welding rod works but you have to make sure you get the correct radius bend. I would go on Barnstormer or whatever and see if you can find some factory parts.

Re: Headliner Wire supports
I happen to have my headliner bows out and in my basement for my A model which should be the same as a '48. If it helps I can trace the curve and measure the length.

The OEM front wire is a 2 piece, it must be fabricated as a 1 piece if the speaker is removed.Bruce Fenstermacher wrote:I happen to have my headliner bows out and in my basement for my A model which should be the same as a '48. If it helps I can trace the curve and measure the length.

That was the case for me as my speaker was removed.T. C. Re: Headliner Wire supports
Piano hinge wire works great and has some temper to it as well as corrosion resistance.
Re: Headliner Wire supports
Happy New Year to all.... Hopefully this bird will fly this year... Anyway, in the 170A IPC, figure 40, item 23 , is a bow which is 2 piece, and sets one end in the tunnel, and the other end is shown just above the rear window. All the other bows have a slot\point\hook for setting into, but on this #23 I have no place for it to set above the window. Is there supposed to be a point in the upper window frame? or is it free floating? The headliner that came with the project was a B model and not installed.. any ideas?

I can't get to my A model till next week to look but I don't recall any floating rods. Fig 18 shows a headliner bow in that location but it is pretty vague as to the exact location.
