Privately-asked questions

Post by GAHorn »

I am getting more-frequently, private emails that ask me questions about maintenance and parts. I believe what is happening is that some folks think their "little problem" is of no import to others....or that perhaps the person is mis-informed and believes I am some kind of know it all.

Let me be clearer about this. I am not a know it all. I only act like one.

The BEST RESOURCE for Members and non-Members alike...are these forums and the MANY real knowledgeable folks here, both amatuer, hobbyists...and PROFESSIONAL MAINTENANCE specialists who participate in these forums.

Not only does it serve one better to ask the question here in the light of day or dark of past-midnight... it also serves many others better as well. There is no telling how many quiet, unassuming folks visit here and benefit from the open discussions and varied opinions that we toss about here, and for each person who finds a solution here....there are likely dozens of quiet "lovable-lurkers" who also are greatly helped.

So, ... next time you think you don't want to "bother anybody" with your question or problem.... Keep in mind that I am likely to get my feelings hurt by the inference that I must be a NO-body if you are asking me something privately.

Ask it HERE! ... in the OPEN!... and not only have a lot better chance of getting good advice, ...but also help other, more shy persons learn that they are not the only ones who have these questions.

Besides...if you ask a question... you'll more likely get a verifiable correct-answer when that person is forced to make the response publicly.

George is 100% correct. I'm sure he gets more questions that I do but I have gotten some privately as well.

I've always answered if I could, by presenting all the popular opinions whether I agree or not, that I've seen here at the forum. What bothers me about that is that I have to present George's opinion for him and I'd rather he retype it himself.

I always encourage people to go directly to the forum with their questions. Most of us don't bite.

Bruce

Any way of collecting those questions and repost them?

ie: "From the Mail Box" Bob from Iowa asks, 'What's the best way to get bugs off my windshield?" or Mark from Wisc asks, "I'm half way through my flight and want to change my flight plan how can I do that?"

I'm sure there many out there too timmed to ask

Just and idea

PMs are just that, and should NOT be reposted. The information would surely be helpful, but if one PMs someone, why would you expect to read it? Just a thought, but George has the right idea, and the correct suggestion. Just my opinion, and we know about opinions :) Jon

That's a DIRECT HIT! I cannot, in good conscience, re-post a private message without editing it, and that would not maintain the integrity of the question, and while it may prevent someone from this forum from identifying the original author.... the original author might feel betrayed.

Wait a second here boys....hold your horses!!!!!!

I was thinking more on the lines of a general mail box that a person could send a question "knowing it will be reposted or viewed by the public" with out having your name on it.

Airplane Bob's mail box type of thing that the moderators could only acess and repost if worthy. Thus freeing up the individual moderators mailbox.

When I have more time tonight maybe I can explane better, got to go

Another good reason to post your questions to the forum is people like me like to read them. :D

Each day at lunch I browse through the questions and responses in hopes of learning something new about my 170 or flying in general. I don’t always agree with the postings, such as green planes are faster (or are they slower) but I look forward to it nevertheless.

Sounds like more work for moderators and no benefit to anyone. Why not simply post your question here and let everyone's collective thinking/experience have a "go" at it? After-all...THAT was the original reason for creating the forums!

Well George, sometimes things can come across as a little hardnosed and intimidating. There must be a reason why some people feel better sending you or Bruce a PM instead posting it on the forum. For every one there could be 10 more that don't bother. Just looking at different ways to get more people active in the forums.

If anyone would like for me to post a question for you and keep your name private send me a PM and I will post it for you.

I am one who likes to read all for the information. I am also the "quiet one' , due to not knowing as much about airplanes as those who have been flying for years. I do learn a lot from the experience of the experienced.

Pardon this response, Dubya, but that's not a good idea. Anyone who re-posts a msg on behalf of another person takes on the responsibility of a moderator, which in this case, would not be authorized by the ITC (Internet Tech. Committee) and might also violate forum rules. It also places the poster in the position of placing msgs into the forums from non-members that may not have authorized access.
Everyone: Please do not re-post msgs on behalf of others. Only moderators should take that responsibility. Thank you.

George

No offense taken. Hopefully you will do the same in my response.

I have not been fortunate like you and Bruce to be blessed with the smarts and inteligence you both possess when it comes to the C-170 and pilotage. Nor am I able to do what I love the most and fly for a living. I did not join this club becuase I own a C-170, I do not, I own a C-172 1957 strait tail that has an o-300 in it. Although simular it is not the same. Just as the unique members in this club they have some of the same interest but certainly do not have all type A personalities, thankgoodness for that.
Take a look at the age of the membership in this organization, through attrition alone this club could loose 1/2 it's members in less than 10 years and along with that a wealth of knowledge. We should always look at ways to increase participation in these forums, and I certainly understand the demands the work place today, if it is a time issue then maybe the club could pick out another moderator to help take some pressure off of you, however I doubt they will find someone with you knowledge base. But atleast maybe allow you to enjoy your membership and fellowship also and not always feel like you have to be on your best behavior.A mailbox for questions still might not be a bad idea.
Anyway I will shut up now and go sit in my corner, thinking of questions to ask that don't sound too stupid when I ask them.

1 more thing George, my sincere and heartfelt thank you for all that you do for the TIC170A club.

Willie,

Of course, if somone privately asks you a question that piques YOUR interest, then it becomes YOUR question to ask publicly, doesn't it?

EXACTLY!

Meanwhile, Dubya,.. it's not a matter of not having the "time". I always answer the privately posed questions. I posted this message thread in the hopes of stimulating more participation HERE .... where it can benefit more people. (Not to discourage direct communication whenever anyone feels the need.)
