2009 Calendar Photos

Post by doug8082a »

Well, the 2008 calendar run is over and it's to start thinking about photos for 2009. The deadline for all submissions is mid-September in order to get the best pricing on printing the calendar. So, please condsider sending me any photos you think are worth seeing on the calender.

Any and all settings/configurations are welcome and encouraged: On gear, skis, floats, in flight, parked, on snow, on water, etc. Also need pics of all models: Ragwing, A, B.

Remember, high-resolution digital pics are best. They need to have a resolution of at least 300 dpi when sized to 11" x 8.5" in order for the printer to be able to use them. I have the software to resize pics and preserve resolution so if I receive a high-res pic that is smaller than 11 x 8.5 I can probably work with it, but their are limitations.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions regarding size/resolution/usability of your pics. The easiest way to see if it will work is to send it to me.

Break out those cameras, folks!

If all goes well, I'll be traveling around the NW with a few other 170's this spring and summer, so I'll hopefully have some good submissions.

Just a bump to remind folks that I always need new photos. Even though I'm looking to transition the calendar duties, I'm still the calendar guy for now.

So, the next time you are out flying or at a flyin, bring that camera!

My non pilot flying inthusist friend asked me if the 170 in on the June calendar was landing or taking off. She thought the flaps were in landing position(sorry folks, shes used to my ragwing). I took a look and said take off, then noticed the elevator. Seems maybe landing. Being a wheels only type pilot, can anyone clear up the mystery?

Thanks,
Larry

Larry-
That is definitely a beautiful picture.

Only the pilot and photographer would know for sure what phase of flight the plane was in. It could be landing, take-off, or somewhere in between.

What it looks like to me is a "step taxi" past the camera position for the photo. A step taxi is where the aircraft is in a fairly level attitude in planing mode used to quickly transition an area "on the step" with medium power. The pilot precisely holds the pitch attitude in the "sweet spot" for minimum drag. Too much or too little elevator increases the drag. The "step" is built into the bottom of the float and is visible just about in the middle of the float where the contour changes along the bottom chine.

The step taxi looks better for pictures and has minimum water drag and maximum airflow for engine cooling as compared to a "plow taxi" where the plane is pitched-up with full aft elevator and lots of power or "displacement taxi" where the plane is floating in the water with its weight totally supported by the water displacement of the floats and the engine is close to idle rpm.

Photos of all 170s are welcome, but one thing I do not have so far this year are photos of ragwings ('48s) so if anyone has some good straight 170 shots I could use them.

Thanks John.

Just in case there is any confusion, despite having posted the "Now taking orders" thread, I still need photos for this year's calendar. I'm sure I'll get more submissions over the next couple weeks (I usually do), but don't hesitate to send me something if you have a good one.

Thanks Larry. The size of that photo is too small for me to work with, but if you have a hi-resolution copy of it or any others I'd love to have copies. Feel free to email me whatever you may have.
