The 170, with the door sill at floor level, and a curved stick pivoted at the forward part of the floorboard wouldn’t be as difficult to enter as a tandem Piper where you have to step over a high sill and maneuver around a stick mounted close to the seat. My issue with a stick is that I would have to come up with a new place to mount my iPad.4583C wrote:IA DPE wrote:I find aircraft with Sticks much harder to enter/ egress and love the 170 for their ease of doing both.n2582d wrote:Now you just have to figure out how to convert the 170 from a control wheel to a stick. That would be a cool STC!
Flying a Cub/ Super Cub/ Champ are fun but getting in/ out is gymnastics. I'm too old.
Agreed!! I did my flight review in a Super Cub last spring and it convinced me of the wisdom you expressed.

Control Sticks in a 170
To keep the thread on securing the rudder from going too far off the rails I decided to start a new topic.

Re: Control Sticks in a 170
It sure would be a neat STC if it could be pulled off...I suspect it would be quite a lot of work to convert...still, I'd love to see it!!
Re: Control Sticks in a 170
They do have a conversion for the swift to install a stick, it does have gear mounted in the wing though instead of the fuselage. That might make a difference.

I think it was at the Cody convention that on the flight line was a Cessna 150 aerobatic [tail wheel] with that 180 hp shoe horned in and it had seating in it with for and aft with dual control sticks fitted. I think it was red and white in color. I can’t not recall what category it was in . It was wild child .

That is awesome! I'd love the 170 with a stick instead of yoke. Almost like a Broussard or Luscombe. Yes please!

Probably cheaper to buy an L-19 than convert a 170

Hey Bryan-
I think a simple stick could be attached to the tunnel with a U-joint and linkage arms connected to the existing T-bar yoke for pitch and clamp the roll linkage to the T-bar chain and just remove the control wheels. Then use the outside pedals for rudders and build a double-wide bench seat on the existing outside seat tracks for the front, leave the bench seat in back, and there you go! I’ll design it if you put it on your airplane!

Don’t forget to put a hole in the seat between your legs to give you access to the fuel valve!hilltop170 wrote:...and build a double-wide bench seat on the existing outside seat tracks for the front, leave the bench seat in back, and there you go! I’ll design it if you put it on your airplane!

You can throw away the B-model placard warning against slipping with flaps 40 since you won’t be able to deploy them at all
