Starter Cable for Cessna 170B
Does anyone know the part number and , or a source for a starter cable for a 1956 Cessna 170 B? Prefer an origninal, but info on any useable will be appreciated. Noticed the info on the service manuals and I am quickly realizing that is a must have item! Thankx for any info.

Hi David,
Check the serial number of your aircraft to be sure you obtain the correct part. For 170B s/n 25373 - 26038 the starter control part number is 0411090-11. For s/n 26039 - 26995 the starter control part number is 0411090-18. These parts (or perhaps a superceded part) should be available through most of the standard sources.
If you don't already have them, I recommend you pick up copies of the Cessna 170B Illustrated Parts Catalog ($37.70 from A/C Spruce) and the Cessna 100 Series service manual '53-62 ($42.70 from A/C Spruce). They will go a long way towards answering these and many other questions you may have and will also help us help you when they can't answer a question.

Starter Cable For Cessna 170B
Hello Doug,
Thanks for the info on the starter cable. Don't know if your part nos. will work. My airplane serial no. is 27039 and your last number series went to 26995. My mechanic and none of his contacts seem to have a parts catalog for this airplane. I am going to take your advice and get a copy. I will also get the service manual. I have only owned my airplane for three months and I love the way it flies, but it is becoming clear that it requires continual care!

I was wondering about that. The Cessna 170 Book produced by the Association lists the s/n for the 1956 model year which include your s/n. However, I didn't see it in the parts catalog... strange. I'm guessing that the starter p/n you need is the same as the 0411090-18 p/n. Since 1956 was the last year for the 170 and the first year for the 172, and since they shared the same production line, I'll bet it is the same p/n as the 1956 172. Many of the 170/172 parts during that time were common.
Doug
Welcome
Hi David,
Welcome to the forum. I own s/n 27010 that is a 56 model built late in 55. I'll double check my parts catalog as well to see what I find. Email me if you have any other trouble finding it and I will dig around in my paperwork to try and help you out.

Beginning with s/n 25373 the panel changed to the "new" layout. At the same time the knob colors changed from that pinkish/dusty-rose color to grey. At s/n 26039 the lower panel layout changed again shifting the entire cluster of controls (carb heat, starter, etc.) to the left about 6 or 7 inches (the throttle appears to have remained centered in the panel, however). This may have changed the distance from the starter control to the starter itself, requiring a control of a different length, That is strictly speculation on my part, having never measured one.
