I'm a fan of the stock metal (original) wing tips.

I just think they look cool/classic, and fit the rest
of the airplane.

That being said, I have a pair of MetCo (Horner style)
wing tips on my '54 (they were on there when I bought
the airplane). I wouldn't personally pay the $500+ bucks
a pair to mount them on my airplane if they weren't already
there.

I flew a '53 with a stock wing / stock tips for awhile and I'll be
darned if I can tell much difference between that and my '54.
My '54 has a Sportsman STOL kit and aileron gap seals. For
practical purposes, that only means (to me) it can fly a bit
slower than the stock '53 I flew before it tips over on you.

I *hate* the droop tips (especially those gawd-awful deep droopies).
Looks like a toddler loaded up and made a mess of both sides of his diapers....

We had a 150 on the field with a set of those big droop tips. It got nicknamed "Sister Bertrille" :D (anybody remember "The Flying Nun"?).

wing tips

Bella,
Do you like the Sportsman wing kit? We are rebuilding our '53 and putting an 0360 conversion, (Del-Air, very satisfied with the STC), and an 80" Hartzell Top Prop on it. Do you feel the wing kit is REALLY worth it, or do you feel Cessna had it pretty much right to begin with. What kind of a speed trade off do you see from your other plane? Can you tell much difference with the aileron gap seals? A little late in the game, but still considering ideas. Thanks, Jon

The Sportsman kit was also on my airplane when I bought it.
I wouldn't personally fork over the money (what is it, like
$2+K?) to put it on a stock wing. Another thing is (if I remember
right, per the installation note + W&B in the logs), the kit weighs
like 18 pounds for both wings.

The going joke is they probably put the Sportsman kit on my
'54 to cover all the dents in the original / stock leading
edges

I think Cessna did have the wing right from the get-go, but
also think the aileron gap seals are a worthwile modification.

Can't give you a side-by-side speed/handling comparison, as
the 40 or so hours I got in the '53 was a number of years ago.

I don't think the Sportsman leading edge kit will harm cruise
speeds much (if any). As far as stalls, I can get my '54 down
to about 35-37 mph indicated before it tips over and quits flying.
