Needed 1948 Cessna 170 Wing

Post by Flyboy123 »

Hi everyone, I am new to the Cessna 170 world as I just purchased my first 170 project. The only issue with the plane is the right wing, about 3-4 feet from the tip of the wing, the rear spar bent from a ground loop. I would like to buy a good airworthy fabric wing from someone, or can anyone recommend a repair shop that could rework the outer 4 foot of the wing. What is everyone's thoughts to get the bird back into the air. I can email photos if needed. Thanks

I don’t know how far from Arkansas you are, but Mountain Airframe can likely repair your wing. They did an excellent job on my B-Model. Talk to Del Lehmann.

Flyboy,
Welcome to the Association! Amazingly KRN has the outer spar tip assembly, (#41) p/n 0520002-25, available. This assembly includes the outboard section of the rear right spar, (#42) p/n 0522400-7. Is there any chance that this is the limit to your rear spar damage? If not I can post the applicable spar repair guidelines from Cessna's Structural Repair Manual.

Thanks for the information. I will get in touch with Mountain airframe. And n2582d, if it’s no problem for you to post the structural repair manual I would appreciate it. Thanks

Univair lists an entire right wing assembly for sale. This is likely new and you won't (I wouldn't) like the price of $9,752.05 unless I exhausted all other possibilities.
CAUTION - My forum posts may be worth what you paid for them!

Bruce posted the Repair Manual here. See 57-21-00 page 803 for the applicable repair. I'm guessing you are the one looking for a wing on Barnstormers.com. If I'm correct, and you can't locate an airworthy replacement wing, you may want to consider Air Repair to repair your wing as they would be closer to your location. (I'm assuming they do customer repair work -- could someone verify this?)

Cessna developed SK70A50-1 to repair damage to the right rear spar. I think this Service Kit is more for spar damage that happens when the wing leading edge contacts an immovable object like a telephone pole. Probably not applicable to your ground loop damage. It is to be used as a spar splice at the inboard end of the spar - anywhere between station 34 and 48. This Service Kit was superseded by SK180-27K according to SL65-96. Although it says it's for the straight 170 the applicable serial numbers it lists start with the 170A. It also differs from SK70A50-1 in that it says it can be used inboard of station 56.531. The price has also increased a bit - from $18.50 to $1230.

Thanks for the help everyone! It took a while but between a wing getting damaged in shipping and a fire almost burning the airport me and my dad were able to make the trip from Northern California back to north Mississippi. It had been a few years since I have flown a tail wheel but after the 22 hour trip home I’d say I’m comfortable in it!
