2836C's Last Flight

Post by juredd1 »

My 1954 Cessna took her last flight last night. It was not under her own power, she had a little help from a tornado. I got a call about 12:30am this morning with the bad news.

I am so sorry for your loss.

It is something you most likely loved, your airplane.

Gulf moisture coming through Texas gets an attitude.

Then some of the Storms and tornadoes develop in Arkansas become just down right mean. Real mean.

Get another C 170B quick.

Oh my! What a nightmare. And what a mess.

Sorry but glad it's only metal that was hurt.

Justin,
I'm really sorry to see your beautiful plane destroyed. It's so sad to see all the time/work you've invested into it gone in an instant.

So sorry to here about this. I saw on the news an airport with airplanes scattered about and wondered if there were any of our type and vintage. To me, it is quite different to see a late model brand XX destroyed than to see a 170 or aircraft of that era destroyed. To survive almost 70 years and then to go like that.
Sorry for your loss.
Fly safe!

Thank you all for your well wishes and kind words. I am insured and was supposed to hear from the adjuster last night or this morning and neither has happened. Never been through something like this so not sure what to expect from them or the whole process. I was told to leave the plane where its at until the adjuster see it. Well we had to move one wing as it was laying out in the county road so it had to be moved. I Avemco insurance

We took a hard hit, my Uncle lost a 46 Aeronca Champ and a Fisher biplane as his hanger collapsed onto of them. When these guys called me in the middle of the night to inform of the missing plane I rushed over and was told we've had trouble finding your plane but think it's laying over there by the county road some 200 feet from where it was tied down in an open hanger. Some of it was elsewhere.

When I get time I'll post some pictures of that as well. We used a small army and lifted the roof to get his planes out.

I'm going to miss my bird. Heck I miss her already, it's a beautiful day to fly right now.

So sorry to hear that Justin! That is WAY worse than mine. Hopefully the insurance will take care of it in a timely manner and you can get on with the job of finding a replacement. I haven't heard from Del Lehmann in Mena, so I hope that's good news...

I'll always fondly remember riding with you at the poker run last year at the convention. This was at Lee Bottom:

So sorry to hear this Justin. Those storms were scary when they passed through TN. I don't think the insurance adjuster will have to spend much time looking at this one. Good luck......

Oh man. Sorry to hear that. Was she tied down outside or did the tornado go through the hanger too?
Good luck on finding a replacement.

WOW! Sorry to see a plane go that way. I have seen some the same way in our area and I hope that mine will not go that way. When high wind is expected, I tie down to the concrete floor so everything will go but hopefully not my plane to do damage to others.
Best of luck to find another.

Sorry to here about the loss of another 170. After the shock wears off contact me. I have my 170b for sale. Wife says I'm getting too old to fly. I'll provide pictures and info.

Sorry again and hope all will be OK.

So sorry for your loss, Justin. That's really a tough one to swallow. Hopefully you and your family and your homes are safe. As much as I try not to personify inanimate objects, I do feel that airplanes have souls and I certainly feel very connected to my family's airplane, and have been my entire life. But at the end of the day, these airplanes are machines and machines can be repaired and/or replaced much easier than human flesh can.

You will be made whole and end up with another cherry 170, I'm sure of it. Remember 36C fondly.
