VOR/NDB IAP's going away

Has anyone seen this list? I encourage you instrument guys to check your local area. http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2015-04-13/pdf/2015-08098.pdf https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_info/aeronav/procedures/reports/media/SIAPs_Propose_Cancel_20150327.xls AOPA gave it a quick once-over but don't s...

Re: Visual Examination Cylinder Walls C-145 O-300

So I know you would most likely be looking for rust and deposits on the valve seats... but what about oil in the cylinder? I noticed during my annual what I thought to be excessive oil in 2 of my cylinders (although I can't remember off hand which ones). Mechanic said not to worry since I had only f...

Re: OK..I admit it... I guess I should paint the stripe GREE

Very nice. I love the airstreams but they can get expensive. You can't get much closer to aircraft construction. Here's a few pics of my all-winter-long ground up restoration project. I think she's finally done. Can't wait to get out and use it this year! IMG_0409.JPG IMG_0411.JPG IMG_0405.JPG IMG_0...

Re: L.E.D. Navigation/Strobes/Interior Lights

Richard, send it to me and I'll figure it out! Ha! Sorry Dave, but this one is too interesting for me to give to someone else!! I haven't had a chance to get back to the hangar to look into this. My CFII checkride is on Sunday so airplane disassembly is not an option until next week! I'll let...

Re: L.E.D. Navigation/Strobes/Interior Lights

Perhaps there is something to both John and Miles' comments. A truly parallel circuit should provide correct operation of both the LED and motor. Maybe there is something with how the light or motor complete their circuits to ground. The ground wire in this installation goes directly to the motor ca...

Re: L.E.D. Navigation/Strobes/Interior Lights

Maybe I've got my GE number wrong... I'll check. George, looking at other resources... specifically automotive, it is normally required to wire a resistor in parallel with an LED used as a turn signal. Now I'm not sure this applies here but with an automotive turn signal that is changed to LED, the ...

Re: L.E.D. Navigation/Strobes/Interior Lights

WAIT A MINUTE!.... Are you certain your beacon doesn't require a TWO-contact lamp such as an 1157 base ? Yes, it has a GE1914 in it which is basically an 1156 that is a little bit taller. So it uses a single contact at the bottom and the keeper tabs are equal distant from the bottom (not staggered ...

Re: L.E.D. Navigation/Strobes/Interior Lights

Here is what I've got... GetAttachment.aspx.jpg The red wire coming up is the 12V power. It splits between the light and the motor capacitor. The white/black is ground which goes to the motor body. Looks pretty parallel to me. My thinking is the LED has less resistance and doesn't allow for enough c...

Re: L.E.D. Navigation/Strobes/Interior Lights

Went back to the hangar today and the motor and light are indeed wired in parallel. The beacon is a grimes although I don't know the model. The motor runs just fine with or without an incandescent bulb installed which confirms it being wired in parallel. It sounds to me like the only solution is to ...

Re: L.E.D. Navigation/Strobes/Interior Lights

Ok so I guess I got bored and decided to get on board with the whole LED thing. I started with the most painful one... landing/taxi lights. I must say, I am impressed. The original incandescents ran 15.9amps and the new LEDs are 3.9. Pretty impressive. I used one beam landing light and one spread ta...

Re: What Charger to Purchase?

I replaced a Gill with a sealed Concorde about 5 years ago and never had it on a charger. 2.5 years later the Concorde died and I replaced it with another Concorde. This time I picked up a battery tender and kept it plugged in while in the hangar. 2.5 years later (about a month ago), the battery wen...

Re: Part No. for generator gasket

Richard has a Jasco Alternator on his 170A. His gasket was leaking. He took it off and found the problem. Yep, new alternator installed just a few weeks ago so I'm certain the shaft seal is good. Upon removal of the new unit, I found I didn't quite scrape all the gasket material off around the bott...

Re: Part No. for generator gasket

Soooo, is the consensus to use a bit of permatex #2 on this gasket? I replaced mine and put it in dry as recommended by my mechanic so as to not make the next replacement too difficult. After less than an hour flight time she's leaking pretty good right at the bottom of the gasket. I scraped the acc...
