It's a slightly longer drive, but if you're interested in steam locomotives, Owosso has this: https://www.michigansteamtrain.com/

Re: This is why I own my 170!
...I've been in contact with Bruce Sdunek, a TIC170A member based at Howell, and he says the hangars on the south side of the airport are owned and rented out by EAA Chapter 1056. I'll have to do some research on Chapter 55. My mistake! EAA55 is located in Mason, not Howell. It's been a while!

Re: This is why I own my 170!
Today's radar pic will explain why I will never live up nawth. I can only imagine how many clothing-optional beaches are up there. (I'd post a pic of Hippie Hollow on Lake Travis on New Years Day but we'd be shut down by the Lord.) Aw, shucks, this ain't bad! It's a balmy 17 degrees here! We actual...

Miles, you can join my former EAA chapter in Howell, Chapter 55. I was a member there when I lived in East Lansing, until 1981. Say hi from me! (Nobody will remember me, I'm sure.)

Re: ADS-B Optimism
Exactly... not much difference at all.... so why do it?...(fly 1 mile to the right of some pre-flight-planned course arbitrarily selected)... when compared to simply taking off and hitting "direct" does the same thing...? Well, yes. That's similar to what I'm saying: fly to the right of t...

Re: ADS-B Optimism
What is the advantage of having an RNAV unit... if all you are going to do is program it to fly over already-established routes?... I don't think we're talking about any significant difference in distance flown between airports. Flying VFR at small piston-powered aircraft speeds, I'm not very far f...

Re: ADS-B Optimism
Regarding George's last post, I have been accustomed every since I got my first GPS to deviating either to avoid a cloud, some airspace or due to just not staying on course and from time-to-time hitting "direct to". Now as I am learning (hopefully) to use ForeFlight on my iPad, I have not...

Re: ADS-B Optimism
John, I think it's more accurate to say that most aircraft do NOT fly directly between two points labelled "A" and "B". They fly between B, F, H, Q, T, and W.... to and from "A". Furthermore, they do not fly exactly ON the direct courseline, even with RNAV. They depart...

Re: ADS-B Optimism
The Wikipedia article is fascinating. I hadn't read about this before, but I've always had inklings about it when thinking about the hemispheric rule (which only seems to make sense when you're flying on a Victor airway). I often feel safer while flying VFR if I'm not exactly on the proper odd-or-ev...

Re: Engine Timing
If you're comparing O200 and O300 engines with respect to ignition timing, you should understand that the spark plugs are wired differently between the two. In an O200, each mag fires two upper and two lower plugs. In the O300, the left mag fires all the lower plugs, and the right mag fires all the ...

Re: Bike rack STC
I remember putting two full-sized bikes in the back of my first 170, a '55 B-model. I covered the rear seat with a sheet, removed all four wheels, put the frames on the rear seat and the wheels on top of them. I may have used quilts to keep things apart. We flew to Rushford, MN (55Y) and had a nice ...

Re: Checking for Fuel Contamination
Exactly what Bruce said. I some states (New Hampshire, for instance) it's a no-no to dump your fuel sample on the pavement, so use one of these: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/gatsfueljar.php This sampler has an integral fine particle strainer, so you can examine the fuel and put it b...
