Re: OVER VOLTAGE
jRenwick I liked your post. What if you just had ALL avionics shut off by the unit's off/on switch?.... Thanks! You're right. By "disconnected from the bus," I meant shut off. That's what the avionics on/off switch does, if you have one. Otherwise, all avionics should be turned off indivi...

Re: OVER VOLTAGE
The Zeftronics regulator is very good at detecting overvoltage and shutting down the generator. So good, in fact, that in my Swift, which has a Delco-Remy generator, I have to leave the generator shut off until after the engine is started. If the generator is on during starting, the regulator will s...

I've seen people actually polish by hand with a soft cloth (sweatshirt material) using Nuvite. Go for it!

Ground loops...I can match that with a little different twist, one landing and one taking off. Figure that one out ! :) I had one takeoff that I thought was going to ground loop. My mistake was accelerating while still turning right onto the runway with a left crosswind. Never again! Always get ful...

Oil temp? How did you measure it, exactly?nmflyr wrote:I have the same problem during the summer. I used a digital laser thermometer and found that the gauge reads 25 deg hotter than the actual temperature. So the temperature was actually within limits.

Hi Wayne! Hi Becky! Lovely photo, Kyle! I always thought yours was one of the prettiest 170s around.

Re: The trip (2015)
What a bummer, Jim! That throttle cable clamp issue has happened many times on Cubs. Once to me, over Ripon, WI, on the way to Oshkosh. I flew the entire approach at full throttle, which is no big deal in a J3. I think many people see it as just a clamp to prevent the cable from flopping around. I'v...

Re: Fuel Selector Valve
After one experience of opening the hangar and finding that half my 170's fuel load had dripped onto the floor, I stopped ever parking a high-wing airplane without turning off the fuel. Marvel-Schebler float valves occasionally fail to seal after stopping the engine....

Re: o-300 D making metal - but where?
You'd expect more drag due to the cylinders not being broken in yet, Kyle. New cylinders are honed to a slightly rough finish, which gets polished by the rings as they break in. You should have less resistance after a few more hours.

Re: Mode C reporting in movement areas at all airports
Thanks, Doug and George. That was the information I was looking for. Most of the pilots I communicate with will never fly to a large airport, but I've let them know anyway, and I'll teach the new rule when I can.

Mode C reporting in movement areas at all airports
I don't know a better place to ask for aviation wisdom, so here goes. I received an FAA email today telling me: "On May 19, the FAA issued a Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) that advises all operators and pilots of the need to ensure that transponders are in the altitude reporting mode wheneve...

Dave,
If you can't find the original, could you substitute something like this? http://www.alliedelec.com/hellermanntyt ... /70162991/
I found that by googling "edge biter wire clip". There surely are others to choose from.

Re: Purchase STC SA7441SW
Maybe depends on the engine. I run 8 quarts in my Swift all the time (also O-300A powered), and it holds it. 185 SMOH on new Continental cylinders, and I'm getting at least ten hours per quart of oil.cessna170bdriver wrote:In my experience that 8th quart gets thrown out in about the first hour.
