For some background on AvGas, see http://www.chevron.com/products/prodserv/fuels/bulletin/aviationfuel/ Over the years, there has been a trend in the AvGas standards from meeting engine specs to meeting other requirements. AvGas specifications are set by an independant ASTM committe. The material is...

Fuel Measurement/Fuel Gauges

A good backup to the fuel gauges is a JPI fuel flow instrument. I added one to my 170 and it has been very accurate. It also interfaces with the gps and will estimate how much fuel you will have at your destination.

Another twist on the story of the top/bottom mag timing. Originally TCM set these engines up so that one mag fired the top plugs and the other mag the bottom plugs. To keep the mag drop in tolerance they adjusted the timing with the 2 deg lag. On newer engines they have one mag firing the top plugs ...

Given the choice of a professional CFI or a local pilot explaining how to get into a mountain strip, my choice has always been the local guys that go there on a regular basis. Some professional CFIs are not current on local conditions - my two cents.

I agree with Dick on the history of the mountain flying seminar out of McCall, thay have had a few accidents, including a Husky that went over on its back trying to land at Vines (?). I personally would not take the flight training they offer, but I've heard their ground school is acceptable. Their ...

There was another accident a few years ago in which a student mountain pilot overpowered a flight instructor resulting in two fatalities. The student had several hundred hours, a pvt pilot an some experience in the mountains. They were dropping mail at root ranch and from all indications he stalled ...

Probably the best conditions that might lead to a ground loop is a gusty wind moving left and right accross the nose on roll out or a quarterly crosswind downwind landing. I got close to one once in Sun Valley, thought I was low on fuel and needed to land for gas to make it home. Was not sure exactl...

An interesting thought - with all the federal benefits associated with aviation, seems like more people would be flying and owning aircraft. The FAA's budget is about $13.5 billon per year regulating and providing services to about 600,000 pilots and about 250,000 light aircraft. Does that work out ...

West Yellowstone, also has a campground located on the field and used to have a good Mexican restaurant in the terminal building. They have a car rental place in the terminal or you could walk into town in about 30 minutes or so. The field gets a very high density altitude in the summer, early morni...

Re: Oil Leak

We had a persistant oil leak on the Franklin, under a valve cover. We ended up using a product manufactured by permetex; a red goo type of mixture that did not harden. We used a surface prep manufactured by them to clean the oil off/out of the metal surface then applied the goo. It was pricey but it...

More hp

I was looking over the 170 the other day and noticed that the manifold pressure gauge was showing 31 inches or so. Ouch it must be in error, then I realized I am at sea level and it can read that high -- the C145 can put out a little more hp. A lot different than living at 5,500 feet msl and every l...

Gapless Rings

I just did the Google search and found that they use them only on the second compression ring. Claims to reduce oil consumption and prolongs oil life by reducing blowby, might add a few hp.
