Re: Plexiglass Panel Overlay - 170A

FINAL POST I wanted to close the loop on this series of posts to give a final readout of the project, with hopes that anyone wishing to duplicate this can skip right to the finish line without suffering the experimentation. Plexi (Acrylic) Overlay Panel: As indicated previously, in my plane the bac...

Re: Plexiglass Panel Overlay - 170A

And the answer is, at least for my aircraft: the plexi overlay was painted on the back. It was not clear with a painted panel showing through.

Re: Cylinder Issues

This likely has nothing to do with your issue, and I'm almost hesitant to mention it as I risk being flamed (as my mechanical capabilities and depth of knowledge limited, at best), but I had something similar show up as a "symptom". During an inspection a mechanic found a crack on one of t...

Instrument Panel Knobs

I know it is generally impossible to find replacement instrument panel knobs. Thus, another opportunity for an interesting experiment presented itself this past week. There are plenty of quality videos on YouTube showing how individuals restoring old radios duplicate impossible-to-find knobs. I won'...

Re: Plexiglass Panel Overlay - 170A

Barry - this is the final (as of now) cut file. The forum wouldn't allow me to upload the file in the .svg format, so you will need to unzip the file prior to use.

Re: Plexiglass Panel Overlay - 170A

Very nice work! So Brian, since you have the system perfected, does this mean you will be making custom plexi-overlays? Some of us have non-stock control cable and switch position layouts marked with label-maker labels. It would really be nice to have correct labels on the overlay. While it was nev...

Re: Plexiglass Panel Overlay - 170A

Some additional progress over the past couple of days, and some interesting observations to share. First off, I did my first cut of the completed plexi overlay but enlarged the cutout holes to a point where they could slide over the top of the knobs on the panel and thus check alignment. Everything ...

Re: Plexiglass Panel Overlay - 170A

Barry - thanks for the advice on the order in which you produced the part. I ran a few tests this weekend to determine a few things like engraving depth, speed, quality, etc., and then did a few tests with a variety of different paint types and painting order. To your comment, the best way seems to ...

Re: Plexiglass Panel Overlay - 170A

Here's the svg I created for my laser engraver. Also attached is the non-reverse version, which has the holes marked. Between the two of them you should have enough to cobble together yours This is immensely helpful - thank you very much for sharing! I just ordered the router bit you suggested as w...

Re: Plexiglass Panel Overlay - 170A

Bruce - I suspect you and my daughter would have a wild and enjoyable conversation regarding your typeface-expeditions. She really geeks out about that. Last night she was spouting off kerning and widths and spacing and a myriad of other technical terms that she proclaimed have absolutely no interes...

Plexiglass Panel Overlay - 170A

Back in October, as I was trying to determine the best way to repaint the yokes in 62C, I pontificated that perhaps I ought to make a new plexiglass overlay for the panel. Seventy years of use had marred the beautiful finish and - over time - the markings on the plexi no longer correctly corresponde...

Re: What did you buy for your 170 today?

A brand-new set of back windows (plus installation). The old windows were, in my estimation, original and in pretty bad shape.

Re: Oshkosh 2021

Planning on arriving Monday evening or early Tuesday and departing on Wednesday or Thursday. All weather-dependent. I'll likely stay at the Fond du Lac (KFLD) airport again as I've done in 2018 and 2019. I've come to appreciate the quiet there at the end of each day.
