Re: OIL

Airparts, Inc. is where I buy mine from. Can't recall exactly but less than $6/qt. last time I bought W100. I walk in and buy so I have no idea what shipping would be.

Re: VOR/NDB IAP's going away

For the Instrument rated pilots here, other than in practice, training, or otherwise non-IMC flying, when was the last time you flew a VOR-A or an NDB approach in actual IMC? In my 17 years of flying, my total for those two is a whopping zero. My base airport is losing an NDB and a couple of VOR app...

Re: FUEL FLOW

Planning about 8 gph seems to work out pretty well for most cross-country flights, including all phases of flight.

Re: Considering a 170, looking for information

I fly IFR with venturis and the only GPS I have is in my iPad with Foreflight. Works great and I trust my venturis more then any vacuum pump. True the venturis MAY ice up but what would you be doing flying IFR in icing conditions in anyway with or without a vacuum pump? But you still have a GPS on ...

Re: Considering a 170, looking for information

You don't need a GPS to fly IFR. My airplane is IFR equipped with a venturi-driven horizon and DG, and a VOR/LOC/GS. That's good enough for training, unless there's no ILS near you to practice on. While technically correct, and "good enough" for training, I don't know any IFR pilot that f...

Re: Considering a 170, looking for information

When we bought our 170, I also had hopes of using it for IFR training. Then I realized how much extra equipment I'd have to add to it to meet the minimum IFR equipment in FAR 91.205(d) , plus the IFR-certified GPS, plus the annual database subscription, plus the biannual pitot-static test. Decided a...

Let me know the part numbers you want and I can get you some good information.

Re: Dumb Question- Windscreen

You guys make absolutely no sense to me... why the heck you would want something blocking your vision is perplexing. One of the first things I did in the Skywagon was toss the strapped windscreen and never looked back. And as far as where to hang the compass goes... thats what double stick tape is ...

Re: How many cylinders will you remove?

Some studs are actually through-studs that help secure opposing cylinders. When installing cylinders that utilize these through-studs, care needs to be taken to ensure the opposite cylinder remains torqued as well.

Re: 170A Tail Light Problem

I converted all my position lights to LED units. I recall having to find a place to attach the ground wire, leading me to think my original socket also only had one wire but functioned correctly. But, that has been a few years and a few beers ago, so my memory may be faltering... Seems like th...

Re: 170A Tail Light Problem

Thanks for the reply. This lamp socket has two terminals on the bottom for leads, (12 VDC and Ground) but only one contact on the inside of the socket (12VDC) for a single element lamp, such as the 1156. I bought a pair of GE-93 lamps to try friday. I tried to jumper a ground to the lamp socket but...

Re: Engine Overhauls

Maybe it's just me, but looking at their web site does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling about the cost. Any shop that wants to remain in business and be profitable shouldn't guarantee a blanket price for any and all engine overhauls. There are just too many variables. If I were considering this shop...

Re: Normal operating oil temps

Our 170 flew for the first time in 6 years. I am currently working on my private certificate so I had to let my instructor do the flying. He was working the engine pretty hard and he said that the oil temp got up to about 185-190. From what I understand this is normal for a C145-2/o-300 ? What are ...

Re: Dual XGPS170 experience?

I do not have an XGPS unit of any kind, but having weather in the cockpit is a huge asset. I used to subscribe to XM Weather on my 496 but the $50+ per month quickly adds up. Less than a year of that and you'd have the XGPS170 paid for. All in what is valuable to you. If you're strictly VFR and don'...
