Re: rubber flooring
For float operations, the carpet flooring in my 170 was unusable. I replaced it with rubber mat from a supplier (although it took some searching for the burn test). This type of flooring looks like diamond-plate aluminum for its molded pattern. It is in very common use here in Alaska, particularly a...

Re: Interesting Army Training Video
This video of the O-1/L-19 groundloop is worthy of watching again and again and again. I never fully understood the failure mode of the gear box until I saw this film several years ago. Its highly illustrative for any real tailwheel pilot, and great for students too.

Re: float kit install
The lifting eyes can be purchased from Air Repair in Mississippi; use the L-19 part numbers (they cross reference perfectly). The V-brace will require a field approval. If you don't have the Cessna drawings you shouldn't be attempting this install. PM me for some reference information. I believe the...

Re: Avcon Throttle part number
Gary, is your difficulty in finding the appropriate replacement per the Avcon STC? My Avcon 360 has a vernier throttle which I loathe, and would like to replace with a more-standard throttle control. I haven't scoured the drawings to see what was originally specified. If we have to get parts approva...

Re: 31" bush tires on cessna 170b
Bushwheels are big and heavy, so if its short performance you're looking for there are plenty of other mods you'd be better off pursuing. On topic, I think 29s are a better fit for the 170 than the 31s. The speed difference between 29s and 31s is negligible, as is the weight and price (all relativel...

Re: Slipping with Flaps
I will respectfully disagree with a few of the posts here, but attempt to explain each point. 1) I recommend trying slips with your airplane at altitude for practice. I've flown a lot of Cessna singles, while never having a problem with a combination of slips and flaps, so I always wondered why the ...

Re: Wheel Pants
I'll revive this slightly old thread, and maybe get it on track with some pointed questions. It will stir up controversy, but we need straight answers ... fast! I enjoyed meeting folks last year in Colorado, and I'm considering flying my 170 to the convention this year. Its a long trip from Alaska. ...

Re: Assist straps
I'm sad to say you're going to have a difficult time finding a pair of these straps. I had to replace one strap (really, one attach bracket) and it was North of $100 for a "repairable" strap. If you'd like to make some assist straps, there is some good information here in the forums -- som...

Re: Avcon or Delair carb heat
Hi Dave. Yes, I have an Avcon O-360 on my 170 with a carb heat gauge. The amount of temperature increase will, naturally, depend on the outside air temperature and acquired latent heat within the muffler. That being said, on an average Alaska summer day (of about 65 - 75 degrees ambient) temperature...

I'd never have thunk that shooting someone the bird would be so difficult.
I've been known to give plenty of people the bird; I'd be happy to help in this instance as well.
I just couldn't resist.

Re: Step kit
All parts sources notwithstanding, would anyone happen to have a copy of the instructions for Cessna kit AK172-168h ? This is/was the kit that allowed early model 172 owners to retrofit their airplanes with Cessna parts back when they didn't cost a fortune. I have Cessna parts; I'd just like some dr...

As promised, an update. I was able to locate the kit at Preferred Airparts. Price was roughly $100. The New-Old-Stock bag had Aeromexico markings and a shiny new Boeing 707 on it.

Re: lakevue or atlee folding seats?
Some time ago I was investigating hammock / sling seats. I too saw that an STC for such a design was owned by Stoots Aviation, which is well known here in Fairbanks. The proprietor owns the STC but is not supporting it at this time. A follow-up post to the BCP quote above states that the FAS sling s...
