Re: Fuel Flow

I installed an old...old shadin in my 170 years ago. They went through it for me and barely charged, then their tech support stuck with me throughout the installation that had a number of it's own challenges. I can't say enough about their product support. It's first class. Now that it's in, I would...

Re: Proper shortfield-softfield technique

Guys,

Thanks much for the advice! With the 180hp and constant speed, getting off the ground is generally not a problem. The issue seems to be in ground effect, where the plane just lags.

Proper shortfield-softfield technique

Hi All, My neighbor has a grass strip that is relatively soft with some trees at the end. As I took off the other day, it got me thinking about proper short field and soft field technique for the 170. My airplane has the Avcon conversion, so it's kind of hard to get in trouble with either....but tha...

Re: Right side brakes

There are more uses for right side brakes other than instruction. I had my seatbelt come loose one time in the middle of a flight (pulled out of the buckle...yeah, I should have caught this on preflight and mx inspections). Instead of screwing with it I just hopped over to the right seat and continu...

Re: Going to Alaska

Hi Keith,

I'm leaving Sunday night right after the show on a red eye home. We'll really only have Wednesday and Thursday to bum around.

Others have recommended Seward, so that's on our list. If no flying adventure, that's ok. It will just give me an excuse to go back!

Going to Alaska

Hi Folks, I'm going to Anchorage next week to work at the Airman's Assoc. Show. Having never been there before I decided to take my wife and go a few days early and see some sights. Any recommendations? We were going to head up to towards Talkeetna and take a ride around Denali but it seems like the...

Re: Reached out to MT Propeller

Guess that explains why no one has it on a C170! Seems like their business model is kind of self-limiting, but apparently they have all the business they want! I work for an OEM, and every day we get calls along the lines of "if you'd only certify XYZ I'd be a customer!" When we get enoug...

Re: ADS-B

I've been holding out for the price to come down, and so far that strategy has worked. However after 3 near misses in 3 years (2 in Class C no less, thanks ATC!) I'm beginning to think I need to pull the trigger so that I can get the traffic info. Like George I'm concerned about the extra cockpit cl...

Re: Potential 170 owner questions

Lycomings are notorious for rust on the cams/tappets if they've been sitting for any amount of time. If it's been sitting, even for only a few months, proceed with caution. IMHO the power is nice, but the constant speed prop is what makes the conversion. If it doesn't have one, I'd be budgeting for ...

Valve stem clearance

I'm getting ready to order some new tires/tubes for my 170, and noticed that Desser offers a tube with a 90 degree valve stem. At first glance this seems pretty attractive as it may allow me to air the tires with the wheel pants on. Does anybody have any pireps on these? Do they fit under wheel pant...

Re: back on skis

I travel all over the middle third of the country for work, and when I'm in MI, MN, WI, etc., and see people driving around and landing airplanes on lakes it strikes this AL boy as awfully peculiar. When I see folks get out of their trucks and start sawing holes in the ice all around it makes me wo...

Re: What’s the story of how you got your 170?

Looked on and off at 170's for a few years, but never real serious. Then my wife became pregnant with our second child. I took a gamble and said if we are going to have a 4 person family we needed a 4 person plane. Pregnancy must screw with brain, because unbelievably she said ok! I had decided I wa...

Re: Big brother ADSB

Drones have brought this issue to the forefront lately in the US. A lot of municipalities trying to pass drone ordinances were unpleasantly surprised to find out that they didn't own the air above them, and that the FAA was not shy about letting them know who does. They can legislate you once you to...

Re: IFR Guidance Requested

I just did my IR a couple years ago in my 170, and it was similarly equipped: KX155/CDI, Narco VOR, Audio Panel, Mkr bcn, transponder. It was adequate, but barely. Not being able to fly RNAV approaches, DME arcs, etc... really limits your options. Not having a second com was inconvenient but doable....

Re: ELT Upgrade..?? ...or Not...??

I had my 406 ELT out of the plane for maintenance and on my bench in my garage with no antenna when it inadvertently went off. First indication was a call from the Canadian Coast Guard (turns out it was their turn to monitor the satellites for North America that day.) I didn't recognize the number a...
