Re: 170 Models

I’ve had two of the Guillows 170 kits since the 1980s. My plan was to build one to fly and one for display. All I need to get started is a round tuit. :| Should still have time to build it, Miles. No fly-ins for a while. I have one of those kits the kids gave me some years ago. Guess I should build...

Re: Mixture Cable Caution

I was hoping I could just go to my favorite salvage yard (Faeth Aircraft) and find a replacement cable......no luck. Those ugly salmon colored knobs seem to be like hens teeth. Here is how I repaired my old cable. I cut the wire off my old knob, drilled out the rod to accept the new wire I found at...

After having to drive to the last two conventions due to weather, I certainly hope to fly to this one!

Re: Stewart Warner Heater

I remember the South Wind heaters back in the 50's. The dealer in Pontiac, Ken Barbar, had one in his 195. Went with him one very cold winter day. The plane was warm inside before we got to the runway. Really worked great.

Re: Leaking primer

"O" ring gaskets from Harbor Freight (they carry an assortment box with multiple sizes) work well on our primers. I have had them on mine for 7+ yrs and no problem plus the assortment will fit many other things around the hangar and house. With full respect, Ol Pokey, I wouldn't use anyth...

Re: Calling All Rotorheads

They're getting kind of old now (so are our 170's) but I always liked the Hughs 300. I have ridden in several - never flew one or took instruction. I would call that the "Piper Cub" of helicopters.

Re: 8 day clock

I have had instruments repaired by Century Instrument in Wichita. http://www.centuryinstruments.net. An 8-Day clock is $355 outright, $250 Exchange, $180 to repair yours, Core Charge is $105.
When Dad filled out the panel in the 170 back in about 1952, he got his instruments at Century.

That's what I used 15 years ago. Still fine.

Re: Whitewalls

Don't ever remember seeing white walls on an airplane in the late 40's-50's. That doesn't mean they didn't exist. Anybody remember or have photos?

Re: Goodby Folks

Don't have to say goodby, Ed. We have several members that can no longer pass the physical, but still come to the conventions and enjoy the fellowship. Please think about coming to the convention in Newton and see what a great bunch of people there are.

Re: Alcor TCP

TCP is a lead scavenger, and as that, seems to work very well. Back in College in the 1950's, we did testing in the auto lab, and it worked well. (We called it Tom Cat Piss then. I still call it that.) I have used it in my 170 since 1985 and have had no problems with excessive lead deposits on spark...

Re: Now THAT'S a head-wind ...

I do remember, many years ago, I was flying my Cherokee 180 from Glens Falls, NY back to Michigan. Not exactly sure what the head wind was, but cars were passing my on the NY Throughway, and this was in the 55 mph days. I think my ground speed was about 45 mph.

I've always thought a motorcycle cable lube tool would be handy. Always meant to get one, and I should do my cables too. Available at Amazon and most motorcycle shops.

Re: FLASHLIGHT on Board?

Always have one in my flight bag. Just have to remember to keep a fresh battery in it. You know the definition of a flashlight - "device for storing dead batteries".
