Re: 1948 170
Hi, I hope this is the correct place to ask some questions. I have been away from flying of a number of years and recently purchased a 1948 170 that has been sitting for 25+ years. My intention is to restore the plane into flying condition and to return to flying myself. That being said my question...

Re: Mag drops with new engine
I've never had my timing drift that much from new or rebuilt mags breaking in before. I don't think I've ever experienced more than 1 or 2 degrees drift for any reason, YMMV. I think I'd monitor the points gap if the trend continues?mmcmillan2 wrote:Mine do have the Bendex mags. Type S6LN-21. Overhauled 8/22.

Re: Mag drops with new engine
One of the lower spark plugs was fouled. Cleaned them then reinstalled. Still getting 120+ on left mag drop. Reset timing and now getting 75 drop on that mag. Airworx told me that it is common to need to reset timing during breakin process. Mag timing can be affected by mag-gear-to-crank-gear “wear...

Re: F&M Oil adapter slippage and leakage
The fiber gasket was definitely a mistake, and the ST07 may well be the best solution but I feel pretty comfortable with the copper crush gasket for now. Sure, it may develop a slight leak if not monitored, but it wouldn't be a catastrophic failure in my opinion. If I were to do it again I'd probabl...

Re: F&M Oil adapter slippage and leakage
Joe, As you face forward, what position does your filter hang relative to the inlet? 4 o'clock? 6 o-clock? etc. I found it interesting that Shane's filter, mounted at 4 o'clock, still rotated, but rotated tighter -- i.e. clockwise -- and was leaking. There is three times the torque on those threads...

Re: F&M Oil adapter slippage and leakage
I installed the F&M adapter on my O-300D 21 years ago. Unlike others I have never had a problem even when I was using the fiber gaskets. There were times when it would rotate slightly when I changed the filter but still no leaks, I was probably lucky. If I were to do it again or if I have future...

Re: Oil Level Sensor - Off Topic
Having a "low oil sensor" that actually shut down the engine would be a grave mistake in an aircraft engine, but I don't see anything wrong with a warning light. In this "day and age", I have a lot more problems with sensors in modern engines than I do with engines. I remember a ...

Re: MT prop AD issued
That spinner should not have been left at an accident site. If you know of its present whereabouts, I recommend you contact NTSB at 844-373-9922 or 202-314-6290 and alert them to potentially important evidence. Let’s hope someone else took care of this since August, but given the seriousness (fatal...

Re: MT prop AD issued
In the middle of August I spent a few days airplane camping at Johnson Creek in the Idaho back-country. About a week before I got there a Husky with two twin Brothers and a dog onboard crashed on takeoff from Johnson Creek. Only the dog survived. I looked at their flight path on Flight-aware and it ...

Re: Tire Pressure & Tube Wear
I have been running 700 and 800 MLG tires on my 170B for 33 years and 3000 hours. I run 24 lbs. and have never had a flat. Never ran Dressers though, but just about everything else. I always powder the inside of the tire and outside of the tube liberally w/ talcum powder for what it's worth when I i...

Re:
An idea on hubcaps: I have seen the screw-holes in Cleveland wheels buggered up both by stripping out the threads, and from corrosion--possibly dissimilar-metal corrosion from using stainless screws in the aluminum (or are they magnesium? ) wheels. I use nylon screws to hold my hubcaps on,since both...
