We disagree, our experience is that the binding is worse with pure 100LL. It is a dry fuel that leaves deposits, leading to binding. In my opinon the 100LL specification needs rewritten, taking advantage of the significant progress that has been made in the unleaded fuel technology. The avgas spec p...

100LL and Valve Lubrication

Here is an interesting bit of info, concerning valve lubrication. If we use nothing but 100LL, the primer and fuel selector valve needs to be lubricated with fuel lube. If the lead was a good lubricant, it seems like these two parts would not need lubrication and all those occurances of valve sticki...

My 170A has the 180 gear legs installed. It does very well, either wheel landing or 3 pt, but wheel landings seem to work best for it. Back in Idaho I've had to land downwind in a narrow canyon due to weather and I was sure it was going to be rolled up in a twisted pile of metal. A down wind wheel l...

GA: It has a 25 amp generator/zeftronics regulator. Noise starts above 1600 rpm. Static occurs on each mag and when on both. No static on hand held at same rpm. We were thinking it was a bad generator condensor/capicator. Tried a 1000 uF capicator from radioshack as a test, but no change in noise.

Radio Noise

We are getting some static on the radio above 1,600 rpm. It happens/occurs on either mag. We used a handheld at 1600 rpm and the audio was clear. I am suspecting that it is a DC bus, generator problem or antenna problem. Any suggestions ?

Here is an off the wall possibility, perhaps there is a slight seating problem with the oil pressure relief valve and your oil pressure gauge is showing signs of age. At idle, the oil pressure would be on the low side, causing the lifter noise.

A few years ago we were flying in Mexico, with the 170 which has the Narco antenna. Like most airports there, you are greated by the Army for paper work checks. One of the servicemen noticed the Narco antenna and asked about it. After some discussion it appeared that they were under the impression i...

Looking back on those years that I spent as an undergraduate engineer pumping gas at an airport for book/beer money, I never did see a fuel nozzle that was magnetic or one that a magnetic would stick to. They should be a non ferrous metal to reduce the potential for static charge arcing. If it was a...

Preventative Maintenance

I was looking at the regs on preventative maintenance; for those of us with polished airframes it sure looks like it is not covered under FAR 43. So does that mean we cannot polish an airframe unless supervised by an A&P.

The condition of the baffling can also be important, I would check the condition of the small baffle pieces just behind the valve covers.

My 170A came from the factory with the C145-D however it failed a lifter and the result was a case crack 30 plus years ago. It ended up with a replacement case for a -H, with the hydraulic arm safety wired closed.

I had a similar problem, it was traced to a bad connector where the field wire connects to the master switch

Sounds similar to Greek law, if your in a taxi and the taxi has an accident you are responsible because your the reason the taxi was there. Or another good one - you run over a chicken not only are you responsible for that one, but several generations of them.

That must explain why George's plane is so slow. Anyway, the pitot/static system is a separate independant system and is not related to the performance of the venturi. The venturi provides vaccum to the directional gyro, the attitude indicator and in some aircraft the turn and bank. If the venturi a...

You have two different models of the strut on the same aircraft. The one with nuts on the outside is from the earlier model 170's, The 170A had the external nuts on the strut near the fuselage
