Seems to me, maybe the only difference between having 6 or 8 quarts in the engine is that with 8 quarts, the oil temperature should rise more slowly during a climb. If you're running with 6 and see normal temps in cruise, but it gets hotter than you like during a climb, put in the extra two quarts. ...

You've got some unknowns there. It's always better to buy an airplane that's been lovingly and competently maintained, and is in airworthy condition and flyable at the time of purchase.

When it starts getting hot, mixture rich helps a lot. This is really important. I've come to regard the red knob as the engine temperature control. I don't understand the accessory case on that engine. I think I'm seeing a couple of coolant pumps where magnetos (at least!) should be. Where do the mags get driven from?

Well, I've learned something. The minimums in all the states are much lower than I thought, and I'm personally carrying ten times the minimum required in Minnesota.

I think the only solutions to this are lots of ventilation, heat if you've got it, or a big dehumidifier if your hangar isn't drafty at all. I keep my heated hangar at 46 degrees in winter when I'm not there, but if the humidity is up I'll increase the heat to match the outside temps. Good time to b...

It's always better to buy an airplane already equipped for the intended mission. 170s, unless they've been extensively upgraded (and we're talking the cost of one or more minivans here :-) are VFR aircraft that can penetrate a thin stratus layer on good days.
