Richard, The story of the squared tail goes more or less like this: 80’s my friend bought the plane from a towing banner company in Rio. It had a square tail, the owner apparently said he modified the tail in order to ‘have more control and tow larger banners’. I am not sure this was the real ...

Thanks Paul, it was fun! Perhaps some translations are in order. ‘Olha a concentração’ means ‘look at the concentration’. We all know that when the tail comes down the fun begins. ‘O outro 170’ means ‘The other 170’ which is the Embraer 170. Even though I work at Embraer I always s...

Cessna 170 Video

Hello All, I put together a little home video of my Cessna 170. For those of you interested, it is on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eBbVsSBnvA Or go to YouTube and search 'Cessna 170 PT AGB'. Just so you know: AGB had a square tail, but it is now back to the original. It looks much nicer with the...

I never had any rat problems but once during a preflight I found a big spider (at least 6 inches) sitting in the rear seat. I was glad that I found it on the ground, I don’t know what would happen if the thing started crawling in the windshield during flight. Turns out it probably got in trough th...

Hello, The NTSB has a Safety Report - General Aviation Crashworthiness NTSB/SR-83/01. One of the conclusions of the report is that Shoulder Harness reduces in 20% fatal injuries and in 80% serious injuries. In my opinion Shoulder Harness is a wordy investment in ones own safety. Regards, Donovan

Thanks. I had the same question, because I was about to buy a B model elevator that would not fit my A model stabilizer.

Thanks. I didn’t think you would be so interested in the tail. The owner that modified the tail said he did that to have ‘more control’ because he wanted to tow bigger banners. Since I never meet the guy I can’t say much about this. Apparently he used the original elevator spar and made it s...

Another New Owner

Hello, Please let me introduce myself. My name is Donovan, I live in Brazil, and I am now the owner of a 51’ Cessna 170A serial 19765 tail PT-AGB. I have been checking this site since I started flying the aircraft back in 2004 and this place has been great source of information. I was very happy t...

Checking the Fuel – Wing Strut

Hello! I don’t trust the fuel gages, so every time before flying I climb the wing and use a ‘stick’ to measure the fuel. My question to you is how to climb the wing? Ideally it should be done with a ladder, but sometimes there simply is not a ladder around for that, so how do you do? I step wh...

I don’t have the serial number here, but could look for it. The airplane is an A model from 1951, but something weird happed sometime ago. This is what I have figured it out: The airplane was towing banners in Rio de Janeiro, the guy that owned that plane said he modified the plane to have more co...

Thanks Gahorn, My 170 is an A model with a standard engine, but with a very non-standard tail (it has a squared tail!) I am not sure how this tail got in the airplane but it flies pretty well, nevertheless I am waiting for the right time to get it back to the original round tail. Thanks again, Donovan

Altitude/RPM for best ground speed and best range?

Hello, I have a question. But first let me tell you a little story. Last week I was going over some mountains and bad weather and found my self at 9700 ft. This was my first in a 170. Well I was a little surprised to see the indicated airspeed dropping a good 10 MPH at this altitude. The indicated a...

My scare moment: I was getting checked out in tail draggers when after one takeoff the 170 got up to about 500 ft AGL and the engine started to loose power. The instructor started to mess with the mixture and throttle as we got back on the pattern. We eventually even climbed to about 1000 Ft, but th...

Thanks, that’s comforting and also easy o the pocket, if you know what I mean. So I will fly a bit and see what happens, which is all good, since flying is the most fun part.
