Re: Oil Pan Heater Pad

That's the sump heater I have on my Lycoming O-360. Works great. I run it for one to four hours before flying in cold weather.

Re: Airworx 180HP O-300 STC

Increasing RPM isn’t the only way to increase power. Power is RPM times torque. More push per power stroke will give more power at a given RPM. Anything that allows the engine to burn more fuel/air will increase torque. That could be increased displacement or volumetric efficiency, or turbocharging....

Re: Fuel Tank Filler

The problem is that the flange to which the filler neck is screwed onto is installed in the tank prior to the top and bottom of the tank being welded together. Right, I forgot about that. When I had my tanks out for filler neck re-sealing I pondered the assembly for a while. Like the straps that ho...

Re: Fuel Tank Filler

No way I’d use a tool like that with the flange still attached to the tank. If you had things taken apart for tank re-sealing, you’d be able to apply solvents and heat, then the wrench, without damaging the tank.

Re: old heading indicator (jammed resetting screw)

Not familiar with that instrument, but what problem are you having? Can't loosen the set screw? There isn't a set screw?

Re: 1948 170

If that airplane has an original panel, post pictures! It’s hard to find examples of original panels, interiors, etc. I’m sure there’d be a few people here who who’d appreciate the help with their restoration projects.

The guy doing the engine swap says the airplane is really nice as-is, and “I wouldn’t change it.”

Re: DO NOT Slip with Full Flaps

I tried slipping with full flaps at a safe altitude, and sure enough, the nose dropped. I lost 100 feet or so, not too bad, but I’ve never had that happen in any other airplane. It was uncomfortable enough that I stopped slipping the airplane at all. A better way to lose altitude is to throttle back...

Re: Installing AF 1441003-1 axels

I don’t know anything about Airforms axles, but those short cotter pins are called out in the 170 parts catalog. They’ll work; just put one on each side, as you showed. It’s true that the normal way of cottering the axle nut is with one long pin, like an AN380-4-10, also known as MS24665-362, 1/8” x...

Re: Alternator STC

I always leave my beacon switched on. I'm not sure it's ever saved me from a dead battery (yet), but it has saved me from turning around on the drive home from the hangar because I couldn't remember if I'd turned off the master.

Re: brake fluid replacement.

Every annual I stick a small tube into the bottom of each master cylinder and draw out fluid until it’s not discolored, then top up with new. And I occasionally have to replace the caliper puck O-ring(s), which requires flushing the fluid from the calipers. So my brake fluid is always being replaced...
