Lift Strut Data

I am searching for the coordinates of the profile used for the wing lift struts for C-170s. Noone seems to have this, not even Cessna. I can measure the coordinates from the strut on my plane, however this is not as accurate as I would like. My searches of online airfoil lists have also yielded noth...

Jud, Do they let you drop those inert bombs from your C-170? Low and slow you'd be far more accurate than an F-18. I work with Darren Grove and Susan Polsky of NAVAIR. Nice folks doing aero work for stores separation and ship wake effects. If your stuff falls correctly, then thank in part these folk...

Jud, Try the Windwood Resort in the Canaan Valley of WV. Great restaurant on the field. We stayed there for 3 nights in September, rented a car and explored the area. Lots to see and do. Prices are very reasonable. The field is asphalt and ours was the third C-170 to land on the field that day. Say ...

Tony et al, I own a B model, and have flown a few hours in an A model. I do like the Fowler flaps in the B due to my field being surrounded by high pine trees. If I flew from asphalt or had fewer obstructions, I suspect that a 170 or A model would be just fine. In fact, the way these things go, the ...

My two cents on this subject: I use two paint stirrer sticks to measure fuel amount. Fill the tanks, shove in a stick and pull it back out. Before the fuel evaporates, mark the top of the fuel level on the stick with a pencil. Repeat for a second stick. You'll need two, as it takes a few minutes for...

Tony, I have owned a '52 B model for 2-1/2 years and find it to be an ideal "empty nester" airplane. My wife and I fly regularly 2-3 hour legs around the Southeast, and I am sure that it would go 4 hours at gross if my bladder & rear could stand the torture. The former is a matter of p...

Fuel Stains

I use both MOGAS and 100LL. MOGAS stains are by far the worse of the two; makes you wonder about filth in it that our motor can tolerate. My paint is rather thin, so I prefer avoding these harsh solvents. Try good old Maguiers' car wax on them. There is enough of an abrasive in it to remove the stai...

Military C-170s

Thanks to all who responded. These confirm the results of my reviewing all my airplane books and Googling for C-170s in military garb - the US has never carried a single C-170 in its inventory. The fact that the O-1 is based on our plane says a lot about its rugged construction. Everytime I watch th...

Miles and Gahorn, great recommendations on Conti vs Franklin. I'm still 300-400 hours away from an overhaul, so a few years out yet. However I like to think ahead and weigh all options, of which there appear to be many. Our field elevation (NC81, Cox Field near Raleigh, NC, home of EAA1114.org &...

USAF C-170s

Is there any record of C170s in use by the US military? I have found some information on the plane in the armed forces of other countries, but not ours. If this info is in the C170 Book that I have not (yet) purchased, then Gahorn will surely tell me to "buy the book", which sounds like a ...

Andrew, thanks for info on 220HP Franklin. How is the availability of these and parts for them? Are normal mechanics able to work on them? Who has the STC for the C170 and what does it do to the cowl? I can't imagine squeezing a much larger engine into the existing cowling. Many of these came out of...

Thanks for the quick response, folks: Andrew - what does the Franklin put out? What has your experience been with it, maintenance and fuel burn-wise? Former Franklin owners I know either love it or hate it, no middle ground. Is yours an original, or from the new production from eastern Europe I thin...

Who has fastest stock C-170B

Folks, I really enjoy my '52 C-170B, but I sure wish I could go 10-20 knots faster sometimes. It is clean, but without wheel pants and with 4" bugeye PAX window (wife enjoys photography), and has usual exhaust stack mod. Otherwise no external mods affecting aerodynamics and it has the original ...
