Hey Joe, I fly mine quite a bit too and fly out of a "dusty" grass field; sand under the grass. I change my oil and filters (air and oil) every 25 hours. Incidentaly, because of huge temperature ranges here; from +40º C in summer to -40º C in winter, I use Aeroshell W100 in summer and 15W...

Good help is hard to find

I feel your pain George! What an ordeal. I just got my plane out of a $3,000. annual. Total time before I had to take her back in: 2 hours!! Had the 180 gear installed, changed the main tail spring, etc. The shop suggested changing my crankshaft seal; this one was leaking (probably 2 drops in the la...

Hi Dave if it is that humid, you may want to try and pull the carb heat after start-up until it runs smooth. When it gets real humid here (Montreal area Elevation 200'), and it does (surrounded by water), my engine runs rough at start up. Last little while, it has been 35 to 40º C with loads of hum...

Hi! And welcome to the club. I have Madras wingtips on my '52. I almost always use 40º flaps under 25 knots off the nose. It lands easily in wheelie or 3 point. On normal approach, I fly 75 MPH (1700 RPM) on downwind, 20º before turning base, 30º before turning final, once lined up and sort final...

Yep! Get a set of Pat Bartone's tail pipes. They come out the back, shoot the bad stuff under the plane, cuts down on the noise and dirty belly.
I simply love them!! Pat is a member and you can find his add and coordinates in the Fly Paper.

180 Gear legs

I just picked up Long Tall Sally from it's annual. At the same time, I got newly purchased 180 gear legs installed. She was parked next to an L19; almost the same height with the new gabs 8) . Could someone who's got the bigger legs tell me if you end up aligning the same as with the lighter legs or...

Gary, you don't say where you fly out of; elevation?? Must be high, cause 1600' is lots of runway at sea level. Full flaps side slips? Does the airflow using the VG's make that possible safely? I liked your report, very good insight. I had VG's on a Cherokee, only 4 per wing and they did work very w...

You can buy a fuel tester from Sporty's, Spruce, Wagaero, etc. It can be used for fuel drain plug sampling too, comes with screw driver; I'm sure you've seen them. They are inexpensive and this is the procedure: 1- Add water precisely to the zero level line on the % of alcohol scale 2- Add fuel to b...

Like I was telling the Young Eagles this past weekend, this good old bird has been doing this for 50 years, it knows the way, we'll just go along for a good ride. Oh Lucky Bruce... Anything will be an improvement after Winnipeg. I lived there for 10 years one year... Your ski flying days 10 months out of the year are over!!! Good luck at the new posting and we'll still try to hook up on our RV adventure to the Rockies this summer.

Joe, you may want to contact the STC holders. On a 172 I owned, there were 2 STC'd items, one of which was Mogas STC, (please don't tell George) and when I contacted EAA with my request for an STC, they told me they already had my aircraft listed (from the serial #) as holding the Mogas STC. They on...
