O-300A Oil Leak from Carb

Hello, I have an O-300A with about 250 TSMOH (2004) that is dripping oil thru the carb, specifically from the carb heat opening on the air box. After flight I get about a teaspoonful of oil leakage. I have also noted that unless I very aggresively lean the mixture during taxi I typically have fouled...

Re: Panel Upgrade

Del, The prototypes are acrylic. Cut using a waterjet. Yes, had a problem with the acrylic chipping, but not too bad. The chipping/blowouts were unsightly and would have been unacceptable for anything other than fixturing/clearance checking. As I provided an AutoCad file the shop charge for cutting ...

Re: The C170 Assoc Red-Green Show

OK!! I understand now; it's a Chevy-Ford thing. I guess that I would have to side with the red side. As my 172 is red/white/blue. But I've got the draggy training wheel also so no comment as to speed (other than slow).

The C170 Assoc Red-Green Show

OK guys. I know that I'm kind of a newbie in the association (coming up on one year). But can someone explain this red-green thing to me? Is it some kind of inside joke? :?: Maybe others would like to know also. Thanks.

Re: Panel Upgrade

Bruce, It's a straight tail 172 not a 170 so I assumed that the Assoc wouldn't be interested in an article. Besides, the guys will rib me to death about that funny looking wheel on the wrong end of the plane! :  But, if the Association is interested, I don't mind writing up something. After all...

Panel Upgrade

Hello Everyone, I have a 1959 C-172 that I bought in June 2009. At the first annual I found a couple of items - mud dauber wasp nests all over the place, corrosion at the cowl/firewall lap joint, cracked spinner backing plate, and an unairworthy prop. Oh well, except for the prop nothing expensive. ...

Re: Question about red-tagging props

Thanks for the offer/info Bruce. I have an O-300A engine and crankshaft. The McCauley Propeller Application Guide lists the FAA designation as 1C172 and their model as 1C172/MDM7653 with 8 3/8" bolts. I would like to ask the brain trust for their opinion regarding the pitch for the new prop. Si...

Re: Question about red-tagging props

Hello Everyone, I appreciate the information provided. The prop in question is a McCauley 1C172/MDM7653. It is an eight hole prop. For everyone's info I spoke to the McCauley engineering department and they told me that in old days these props were made without balance holes. Later models do have a ...

Question about red-tagging props

Hello Everyone, I posted a topic in the trademart forum looking for a new McCauley prop as mine was returned from a prop shop with a red-tag. My question here is the shop was told to only paint the prop. Not to NDT and inspect. They said they red tagged it because the backside of the hub had one hol...

Control Yoke Bushing

Hello Everyone, I have a 1959 C-172 and am completing a partial panel upgrade. I have converted to a standard six-pack configuration with a Gizmo mount for the Garmin Aera on the floating panel. I measured and drew the panel and bulkhead on AutoCad, cut a couple of prototypes on a waterjet out of pl...

Re: strut step

P.P.S. I am a nitwit. Obviously, the gear leg step will not work on a C-172 with it's legs behind/under the wing. I am interested if anyone knows where I could get a strut step. Presently, my little stool gets me up and I put a towel over the strut and stand there while refueling if no ladder is ava...

Re: strut step

P.S. To clarify - I would consider either a permanently mounted strut step or a the removeable type like Dougs. I probably prefer the gear leg type with rubber coating as my gear legs have been repainted and are not chipped up.

Re: strut step

Can anyone tell me if the strut step (either Doug's type or others) that is used on C-170 will work on the early straight tail C-172s? I have a 1959 C-172 that has no steps, either cowl or strut. For refueling on trips I carry a folding step stool that I purchased from Aircraft Spruce. It would be n...

Re: 172's and 175's Defect Report

I've got an early model straight tail 172 that I have been upgrading and definitely appreciate the information posted here. I joined the Association since the 170 & 172 straight tails share so much in common. This organization has been the best money I have spent on the plane. I am really glad t...

"Stepchild Straight Tail 172" Needs help

Hello, I joined the 170 Association after meeting some fine people at SNF this year. I have a 59 172 straight tail and have a nose wheel strut that is quite pitted. I sent it to a FAA repair shop for replating but they have told me the pitting is too deep for their repair procedure. Consequently, th...
