Re: Pattern procedures

So you checked the brakes airborne, found a problem, corrected it and landed uneventfully....and now you have stopped checking? Doesn't make sense...from your description of the event, you would have landed completely unaware of a locked brake, that would have ended badly. Like you, I was trained t...

Re: Pattern procedures

One more thing... for those who fly an A model (I bet it works for the B as well) and have trouble with keeping your eyes off the panel and actually looking outside, I have found that after power reduction abeam the numbers, keeping the bottom of the wing parallel to the horizon will give you VERY g...

Re: Pattern procedures

I'm with George on the brake test prior to landing. I was taught to use GUMBLES for a pre-landing checklist: gas, undercarriage, mixture, BRAKES, engine, seatbelts. About a year ago while landing on a nice calm WINDY day in Boulder City (there's humor in there somewhere), I performed my GUMBLES chec...

  I see your point! (Of course, the BEST instructors are capable of learning from their CLIENTS as well.....It's a two-way street! I suspect you could teach HIM a few things!) Boy isn't that the truth!! I have always tried to learn from my students who are more familiar with someth...

Video example in this post: http://www.cessna170.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=10319#p92712 Does everyone else dump the flaps right at touchdown? It seems to be something that takes practice to make perfect as Arash has clearly demonstrated but too often when I have tried to play with flap se...

photoresize.jpg photo(1)resize.jpg Went to Long Beach, CA yesterday for some CFII training when I happened upon the "Memphis Belle". Of course, the real "Belle" is in a museum in Dayton I think but this was apparently the one used in the movie. What a great airplane... the B-17 ...

Re: panel lighting and rheostat

hmmm... well this has me thinking. My EI instruments are wired as recommended by the factory so as to have the peripheral LED's on the rheostat and the center LCD light always at full bright. This setup doesn't work well because the center light is way to bright at night and it bleeds into the LED l...

Re: Can I save my Narco Antenna?

I asked about this because of erroneous CDI indications. I had the nav radio and VOR indicator removed and bench tested first and both tested good. All wiring and connections are just a few years old and were not suspected bad. The only piece of the puzzle left was the balun. I made a new one with R...

Re: Can I save my Narco Antenna?

Paul, did you end up going with a 26" balun? If so, wouldn't the excess stick out the bottom and hit the headliner? It seems other sources recommend a 16" balun measured from the top of the loop to the point where the shields are connected at the base. From what I gather, the 16" dime...

Re: '52 & Older 170 8-hole Instrument Panel

I had the panel made custom by a local fabricator (near FUL which is close to you) using the same material. You do need to be careful which instruments go where as control T clearance can be a problem with the lower center instrument. My compass was mounted on top of the panel so moving it was not r...

Re: Tail Up Taxi...

Since we are talking about raising the tail prematurely, and I hope I'm not hijacking this thread, do all 170 models have a VERY heavy tail at the beginning of the takeoff roll? I would imagine this would be the same as a high powered taxi in order to get the tail off the ground. I'm not sure this c...

Re: Cessna 170 Loan Issues

I had great luck with Red River State Bank. They specialize in aircraft loans and worked out great for me. As for the airplane, the advise given here is great. Take your time and buy the best quality plane you can find for the money you want to spend. When it comes to both mods and condition, it is ...

Re: Sandy Hurricane Airports Small Aircraft

They are not even always safe in the hangar. I went over this morning and did everything I could to secure my door and to move the plane as far as possible from the door. I noticed on the Philadelphia weather they have dropped the wind predictions from 37mph to 29mph so maybe it won't be quite as b...

Re: High temps and carb heat

It sounds to me like you may be running slightly rich in general. Higher temps mean higher DA which may require slight leaning of the mixture to compensate. Adding carb head further enrichens the mixture which may be causing your roughness. Check your RPM during shutdown. You should get a very sligh...
