Hah! Knot-head it is, I suppose. :D As long as I can fly the 170, you can call me whatever you like!

I installed a dual scale ASI in my 170B a couple years ago. I picked it up from Aircraft Spruce from around $250 which included range marks for the 170. I have to agree with Eric, though. It did take away from the "cool" factor on the panel. Personally, I've never had a real need to refere...

John, With just one vented cap, have you experienced a situation where the fuel is used at uneven rates from the tanks? When I had just one vented cap (on the right tank), the low pressure over the vent caused the right tank to siphon fuel from the left tank during flight. After an hour of flying I'...

Yup, it sure was nice to see a 170 get some time on a major channel like Discovery-Wings. She sure looked good against that mountain backdrop.

Enjoy!

Inertia Reel harnesses

I currently have the fixed Hooker "Y" shoulder harnesses installed and am interested in the inertia reel harnesses. My question is, is it possible to install the intertia reel harness (Hooker or BAS) after already having a fixed shoulder harness installed? Since they would seem to install ...

Hi David, I've been slowly picking away at restoring my '52 170b and have had some similar questions myself. Here's some of what I've found: Carpet - My '52 came with an Airtex interior including carpet and it looks quite nice and wears well. I'd look into them for my carpet needs in the future. Pan...

Yup, that's the guy!

He and the 170 have about 5 minutes in the show. I've got it on tape (since it came on at 3 am) and you can have it if you'd like. If you can't find someone to tape it, just send me your address and I'll shoot it out to you. It probably means more to you than me anyway.

Hey, I'll bet the pilot they showed was your friend! His name was Andrew and was working on his Inst. and Comm. tickets at Strand Flying School, Walker field, Grand Junction, CO. Could that be him?

I'm based at Mansfield, MA - about 18nm NE of Providence, RI and 25 SW of Boston, MA. 100LL is $2.55, tie downs are $55, and hangers (if you want to call them that) are $180-$200 with dirt or broken concrete floors that aren't the same level as the taxiway and doors that can break loose in strong wi...

A C170B gets some national air time

I just caught part of an episode of "Wings at Work" on the Discovery Wings Channel and lo' and behold - the was a C170B! The episode is called "Classroom in the Sky" and talks about flight instruction of various types - mountain flying, seplane, etc. The C170B (N1881C) is feature...

I went through this exercise about two years ago on my '52 with an O-300A. We had to pull the engine and remove the accessory case in order to remove the sump (as you had already guessed). This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. When we removed the sump we discovered quite a bit of corrosion i...

For what it's worth, my O-300A (550 SMOH) has just barely burned half a quart in the 6.5 hours since the last oil change. I always put in 8 qts. at the oil change with no oil blown out the breather and I usually go about 12 hours or so before I need to add a quart.

Storm Damage

Hi folks, We had some 50mph+ winds up here in New England last Friday (which is a little unsual given the fact it isn't hurricane season). Anyway, my '52 B (s/n 20934), which just came out of annual, had been tied down by some flunkie from the maint. shop who can't tie knots. The plane broke ...
