Oil Consumption
I have a C145, about 1400 SMOH and 600 STOH, it burns about a quart in 6 to 8 hrs depending on how hard it is run. 2300 rpm about 1 quart in 8 hrs above 2400 about a quart in 6 hrs. Compressions at last annual were all 76/80 or higher. It has an oil leak through one of the case bolts, we believe one...

Re: Insurance
This is interesting. Avemco last April increased the hull value of my 170A to $40,500 for their quote to renew. They also increased the insurance cost by around 10% even though the previous value was $38,000 insured. I have about 1,750 hrs total time, about 1,500 hrs tailwheel time, aircraft is hang...

Rough Running Engine
One other item you might wish to check is for a sticking or poorly performing lifter. Carbon buildup may cause a lifter to stick intermittely, air entrainment in the oil if the oil level is low or if the oil pump has an air leak on the inlet side, will also cause a lifter to perfrom poorly.

Engine Covers
One alternative to purchasing a custom made engine/cowl cover is to use a couple of saddle blankets, they work pretty good on the 170. They fit well in the baggage area and have other uses as well.

Compass Mounting
My 170A has the compass mounted to the windshield and it works well there. The windshield has been replaced with the single STCd plexiglass type with no center strip. The compass is enclosed in a housing/fitting which is attached to a mounting block on the windsheild. The block appears to be made ou...

Brake Line Retainer Clip
Those hard to find parts that nobody has anymore ? Being the engineer that I am, I would suggest you find some 4130 steel stock and make them. It might take you an hour or so on a grinder and tourch to do so. As long as you own the aircraft the FARs permit you to manufacture replacement parts that a...

160 Mph on 12 gph
It is a curve fit of published performance data. The values above 145 hp are extrapolations of the data. I was checking to see what the advantages of going to the 220 Franklin and the 180 Lycoming were versus the cost.

Re: Starter Arm Return Spring
The C170A manual is also missing the parts number for the spring. Such a spring is called out in the C145 service manual page 24, paragraph 1 (d). With no part number an appropriate spring, installed in accordance with standard aircraft maintenance practice, to return the lever to its fully relased ...

Starter
My opinion - You should have the starter pulled and the bushing replaced. There is also an oil seal inside the housing that might have also failed and could be sliding free on the starter pinon shaft inside the accessory case. That bushing might have slipped free due to wear or a became free due to ...

Tall Tales
This story is true :P perhaps. A few years ago an outfitter had a mule get sick on him at the Moosecreek Ranger station (Northern Idaho). The only way in there is by raft, pack animal, hike or aircraft. So fearing the worst, the outfitter got one of the local pilots to bring in a vet to check over h...

Idaho/Montana/Wyoming Airstrips
There are many airstrips in Idaho that are fun to camp at, fly to or hike around after you get there. A good reference is the book FlyIdaho by Galen over in Sun Valley. Galen also has a similar book on airstrips in Montana. If you have time stop over in Johnson Creek, Smiley Creek, Big Creek, Chambe...

Nifty Gadgets & Turbulence
One nifty gadet is a turbulence meter that can be made easly. A pedometer works well for this application, just velco it to the panel and you can count the miles away on those rough afternoon days. Its a interesting gadet for rough strips and mountain flying.
