don't worry George, I'm not mad if anybody disagrees with me - opinions vary, and experience colors opinions. I'm happy if any thought I post here gives a nugget of help to anybody. Besides, this forum has been a wealth of useful info since I found it, even to this humble nosedragger driver  H...

why take the fuel pumps off? you'll save, oh let's see, about 4 lbs of pumps. you'll find out that the FAA probably required all those pumps due to fuel flow needs under certain conditions, like takeoff or climb power, to meet the certification standards (FAR 33 for engines, IIRC). You'll kill somet...

I've got a carb heat gauge too, but darned if I can remember how much the temp rises with carb heat on - I just look for a rise and it's pretty significant. As far as the RPM drop goes, 300 sounds a skosh much - seems like 200 drop is more normal on mine. I may just have to find the time to run my c...

hey Lance, where are you working on it? one of our planes is based at Jet West, if I need to come out there again yet this spring I'd love to come see your engine swap project! I did one for a customer years ago, really made a different plane out of the old 170.

I know many will not like to hear me say this, but car gas act differently that avgas - there are reasons they invented avgas. different vapor pressures, BUT output, blah blah. so sometimes things just act funny, which probably meant that you were getting some carb ice - like you figure - and car ga...

I replaced all my baffling with RAM orange silicone stuff, like we use on all our twins. I used rivets, mounted the seal on the inside (engine side) of the aluminum baffles and worked it so it leans forward. That means that the airflow will push it up against the inside of the cowling, whole idea be...

my brother-in-law used car gas in my aerochine for a few months, and within the year I was busy rebuilding all the valves/seals/etc. I hate the stuff, but that's my problem so you don't need to chime in  reasons why the valve will get stiff (same for Cubs, Cherokees, all Cessnas, you name i...

whatever FSDO's area you are working in, they are your local gurus and their INTERPRETATION of the FAR's, Advisory Circulars, FAA Guidance, etc is the law. Good luck contradicting them. When our company moved to eastern ND, the Fargo FSDO became our new lords. They didn't want anything to do with ou...

proper repairs

Each new set of eyes that sees a plane has a new perspective, and will find different things. If the repair was done internally, and thus hard to see unless properly inspected (and there are plenty out there who don't really work hard enough to see all the nooks and crannies that really need to be l...
