Re: Purchase STC SA7441SW
Seems to me, maybe the only difference between having 6 or 8 quarts in the engine is that with 8 quarts, the oil temperature should rise more slowly during a climb. If you're running with 6 and see normal temps in cruise, but it gets hotter than you like during a climb, put in the extra two quarts. ...

Some aircraft with wings like that have climbed to 50,000 feet without any engines at all!Aryana wrote:I guess that big 200' wing and 16' diameter props must have made all the difference.

Re: Assembly after transport?
You've got some unknowns there. It's always better to buy an airplane that's been lovingly and competently maintained, and is in airworthy condition and flyable at the time of purchase.

Re: High Oil Temp?
When it starts getting hot, mixture rich helps a lot. This is really important. I've come to regard the red knob as the engine temperature control. Also, avoid extended climbs at low airspeeds on hot days. And expect the oil temperature to be close to the red line when climbing on hot days; it's no...

Re: Continental TSOL-300-2
I don't understand the accessory case on that engine. I think I'm seeing a couple of coolant pumps where magnetos (at least!) should be. Where do the mags get driven from?

Re: ADSB survey
FWIW, here's a link to a survey from the FAA regarding ADSB for those who haven't seen it. The link came from FAA Safety.gov.... This survey is not being done by the FAA; it's a research project of the Flight Training department of Embry-Riddle University. I filled it out; good luck to them, whatev...

Re: Airplane Rides - Liability
Well, I've learned something. The minimums in all the states are much lower than I thought, and I'm personally carrying ten times the minimum required in Minnesota.

That's like having no insurance at all. Crazy!Aryana wrote:The minimum liability insurance requirements for private passenger vehicles in CA is laughably low.
$15,000 for injury/death to one person.
$30,000 for injury/death to more than one person.
$5,000 for damage to property.

Re: Airplane Rides - Liability
I have the impression that the $100K is extremely standard in the airplane insurance world. In other words in having this policy limit I'm acting as responsible as most. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. I have the same impression, Bruce. But the minimums for auto insurance (set by the states...

Re: Airplane Rides - Liability
I'll bet most of us are underinsured in aircraft, relative to auto insurance policies. $100,000 personal injury is common for aircraft policies, whereas your auto liability coverage is probably more like $250,000. That seems to be the case in Minnesota, anyway. In the case of a fatal accident, the d...

Re: Moisture
I think the only solutions to this are lots of ventilation, heat if you've got it, or a big dehumidifier if your hangar isn't drafty at all. I keep my heated hangar at 46 degrees in winter when I'm not there, but if the humidity is up I'll increase the heat to match the outside temps. Good time to b...

Re: Considering a 170, looking for information
It's always better to buy an airplane already equipped for the intended mission. 170s, unless they've been extensively upgraded (and we're talking the cost of one or more minivans here :-) are VFR aircraft that can penetrate a thin stratus layer on good days. If you want to fly IFR, go buy an IFR ai...
