Re: Best Mods for 170 STOL performance
Dang I wish I would have known this before, I should have just bought a $150,000 185 instead of spending a few grand to make my 170 perform a little better

Re: Best Mods for 170 STOL performance
Most of the good operators I know can fly ratty stock-ish aircraft a lot better than the guys with $100k Gucci rides who only fly on occasion... Always such a silly argument and not helpful. It's right up there with "I know you are but what am I..." The question was how to get the best sh...

Re: Best Mods for 170 STOL performance
And just like any other aircraft the number one thing you can do is learn how to fly and get good at flying the aircraft you have. Hard to beat a pilot who knows his aircraft and is comfortable pushing it to the edge of the envelope. I'll second that statement, knowing your plane and how to fly it ...

Re: Best Mods for 170 STOL performance
Since I've owned my 170 I've added a 80/42 climb prop, 26'' bushwheels + baby bush tailwheel, and a sportsman stol kit. For reducing the takeoff distance and increasing the rate of climb the new prop helped out the most. The sportsman stol kit is really great too, it allows you to approach a lot slo...

Re: What baggage doors can be used on the 170b?
It should work. Contact Delair in Porterville, CA they have the STC. I have one off a 172 that I need to install also.

Re: ABW Baby Bush vs/ 400x4
The baby bushwheel sure is nice in the soft stuff, I've gotten the standard 3200 stuck before, but not this one. It's also much better in the rough and rocky areas. The 400x4 will give you the same flotation. It won't be quite as good in the rough spots, still much better than stock though. When min...

Re: Have a 170 question
I did have the back seat out. Actually its always out because I usually just fly with my wife, then have plenty of space for camping gear and the dog. But Buzzlatka and I do go in and out of that strip with 2 aboard and full fuel with our 170s.

Re: Have a 170 question
1300ft is doable especially with no obstacles. I've flown my 170 out of much less. Here are a couple videos going out of Buzzlatka's 1300ft strip surrounded by tall trees. This is with a stock wing and an 80/42 prop. It now has a Sportsman on it as well. https://vimeo.com/34146329 https://vimeo.com/...

Re: High Sierra Fly-In/Oct. 27th-28th
Yes, that spot was very rough, even for the 26'' AKBW at 8psi. Kevin showed me that spot and he's the only other plane that's been in there. I walked the "strip" after we landed and removed some huge rocks out of the way so the takeoff would be a little smoother.

Re: High Sierra Fly-In/Oct. 27th-28th
It was a great fly-in! There was 4 different 170's that made it in. It was nice to meet you Bruce. http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g160/robfarland/Three%20Shot%20Gun%20Shells%20and%20a%20Pair%20of%20Shoes%202012/IMG_4022.jpg http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g160/robfarland/Three%20Shot%20Gun%20Sh...

Re: Co-Pilot Photo
Our dog Tieton flys with us all over. We actually found her out in the woods while airplane camping at Tieton State Airport in Washington state. She had been abandoned out there and was 15 pounds underweight and had sores on her paws. She is doing much better now. http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g...
