Re: Name change for the Eternal Project

The stock wheel pant mounting plates I owned aligned the wheel pants parallel to the ground. I don't know how it could be any other way, unless someone manufactured custom mounting plates to tilt them upward.

Re: Cold Weather Operations

I never had winterization plates for my 170, so I put duct tape over the part of the cooling intakes where the winterization plates would have been. That worked fine to keep the oil temperature a little warmer than it would have been without it. I always removed the duct tape post-flight while the a...

Re: ADS-B requirement

...AOPA has drunk the Kool-Aid and is all in favor of anything which helps sell avionics and technology because it brings them so much money. This may be true, but on the other hand: John Collins, who wrote the draft position on eliminating the requirement below Class B airspace, works for AOPA, an...

Re: Fuel Tabs (Gallons Left)

If you measure unuseable fuel that way, you'll come up with more than the 37 gallons Cessna claimed was useable. I calibrated my stick the other way -- started with a full tank (37 gallons useable), removed two gallons, marked the stick (35 gallons), lather, rinse, repeat. If you do that, zero on th...

Re: ADS-B requirement

Thanks. I submitted a comment agreeing with Mr. Collins... and ADDED my comment that the rule should be changed to raise the ceiling to non-equipped aircraft to 12,500' MSL as a MINIMUM in lieu of the 10,000' proposed,.... and/or 14,000' MSL (or 2,000' AGL) to allow aircraft to transit mountainous ...

Re: Good news and bad news for our 170s

Thanks, Del. I was thinking along those lines when I wondered if IAs should be checking for a valid registration, but you've taken it a step further by ordering the CD. Many owners and pilots misunderstand the full meaning of airworthiness and what their responsibilities are. This is where a conscie...

John, can you repost the notice/comment link above? (It appears broken.) Sorry about that! Try this one: http://www.noticeandcomment.com/John-Collins-Exemption-Rulemaking-fn-223232.aspx There's a "Submit a Comment" link in the middle-right of the page. Click on that, and it will take you ...

Re: Good news and bad news for our 170s

...And it is not about the $5. It is about knowing who owns these terrorist tools. Because terrorist will always have their aircraft registered correctly. Bruce, I know you're being facetious, but I believe the real reason for keeping registration info current is so that the FAA can contact owners ...

ADS-B requirement

I'm reposting this because I first put it in an inappropriate place: I'm very concerned that the ADS-B rule as currently written will do a lot of harm to airports underlying Class B airspace. I fly out of one such: Lake Elmo Airport, MN (21D), a few miles northeast of Minneapolis-Saint Paul Internat...

Re: Good news and bad news for our 170s

Might be a good idea for IAs to start checking the FAA Registration database when they annual an aircraft (if they're not already doing that). Without a valid registration with a current owner address, an aircraft is not airworthy in the US.

Re: A Question On Aircraft Registration

More on flying in Europe: it turns out, bizarre as it seems to me, that there is a distinction between EASA and non-EASA aircraft. You need an EASA "licence," (British terminology) or an EASA validation on your US or Canadian certificate, to fly EASA aircraft in Europe. The validation is g...

Re: A Question On Aircraft Registration

Your U.S. Pilot's certificate is not a license.... As Shaw said, two peoples separated by a common language. :-) Anyway, one probably shouldn't assume it's not possible to fly in Europe with a US certificate -- instead, ask the country's aviation authority what's allowed. In reaction to the EASA ru...

Re: A Question On Aircraft Registration

Well, I found my records from 2002, the first time I flew PIC in Europe. My host made enquiries with the British CAA, and had an email from someone in CAA Licensing Operations stating that "Holders of a valid in every respect and unrestricted ICAO issued pilot's licence, are entitled to operate...

Re: A Question On Aircraft Registration

The EASA rules are new... but the rules merely replicate what has been in place for at least 30 years. My Brit license which was required expired in 1987. My Bermuda license expired in 1989. Those licenses were issued predicated upon rules already in place prior to the 1980s. EASA is merely the &qu...
