Re: Built-in Intercom

I installed an intercom but I still have a mess :( http://www.mgcpa.com/c170pics/intercom.jpg I installed two plugs at both ends of the panel and just plug the PPT into the mic plug. You can just see the pilot’s mic and head plugs in the photo. I got the idea from looking at other 170s. If I was t...

I’m the owner of a small CPA firm working 10+ hour days seven days a week until April 15th. Needless so say I don’t do much flying this time of year. However, last night I decided to take off early (6:00pm) and stop by the airport on my way home to test what I’ve read on the forum. I’m a rel...

Several weeks ago I finished reading The Spirit of St. Louis by Lindbergh. I’d have to say it was one of the more interesting books I have read in a long time.

My father made the following cover which can be installed or removed by loosening the two screws and sliding the cover to the side. It looks like a factory part although it only helps a little. http://www.mgcpa.com/c170pics/oilcover1.jpg Back side of cover: http://www.mgcpa.com/c170pics/oilcover2.jp...

Gahorn, I was forced to replace my exhaust last year during the annual and found the current system here on the forum. It does work better than the original 1950 system. I’ll keep your suggestion in mind although so far my family seems happy and we only use full heat when it is below freezing. Mark

I just happen to have a photo of my 170A’s heater hose layout. I seem to stay warm although I also rode my motorcycle to work this morning – it was one degree below freezing :)

I earned my private last summer in my 170A. So far it is the only plane I have flown so I can’t offer much advice on your question. However, I can say I had a blast learning to fly in my 170. And both my instructor and mechanic have commented multiple times what a joy it is to fly. I’m with the ...

There is a company based on the field where I keep my 170 that sells lighting systems. I know noting about them but have seen a low-voltage light on their web page. They even say it is approved for the 170 :D

I recently purchased a DVD with 1950s flying “propaganda” films and one of the shorts was the “Flying Businessman (1953).” The film touts the advantages of aircraft to the 1950 businessman. About five minutes of the film shows a student pilot receiving his instruction from start to finish in...

I just passed my check-ride earlier this month in a 170A. Almost every pilot I talk to says they wish they had learned in a tailwheel aircraft. I had just over 90 hours when I took my check-ride but that was due to work and family not the aircraft. I would guess learning on the 170 added no more tha...

I had a similar problem after installing a second venture to run new gyros. The second venture was installed next to the existing venture on the left side of the plane which is the same side the static port was on. Before the modification everything worked fine, after the installation I experienced ...

During my prior year’s annual we decided to replace my rudder horn. We didn’t realize how bad it was until it was removed - the arrow is pointing to a crack that is about an inch long! 8O Unfortunately, I’m not sure where my A&P purchased the replacement. http://www.mgcpa.com/mark/flying/c...

Welcome Ken, I actually traded an old Harley-Davidson FLH Shovelhead for my 170 - plus some cash. Then several months ago I sold my Honda CBR900RR to pay for repairs on the 170. :( I still have a 1994 Honda GoldWind and a 1999 Suzuki SV650. Before getting into flying, I raced motorcycles at the loca...
