I suspect the 3 inch lip was actually added to the 1948 after production started maybe due to cooling issues. My 48 S/N 18608 has the 3 inch lip. AN884 should be similar to 306 hose.
If you google AN884 and pull up WIck's ad they reference 306.

I've found wetting the PPonk bolts with MMO increases tensile strength.

If MMO was green and not red then the modulus of elasticity would be greatly reduced!
