Re: Wing root fairing stripped hole repair
Before you take drastic measures to remove those tank screws, try soaking each screw overnight with Hoppe's #9 gun cleaning solvent. A drop on each screw is plenty. A light tap with a small hammer helps as well. I have had very good luck with Hoppe's breaking loose corroded fasteners. It won't hurt ...

Re: Oil Sump Corrosion
You mentioned spray welding. The folks at Kelowna who do the epoxy repair will not do their repair on a sump that has been welded. Magnesium is very difficult to weld correctly. I would send it to Kelowna first and if they reject it for any reason, then send it to the spray welder. More options that...

Re: Front seat grab handles, original?
Originals are hard to come by and usually in bad shape due to seeing a lot of hard use. F. Atlee Dodge in Anchorage has made replica end fittings from stainless steel bar stock that can be hand finished to look original. The picture shows an original with Atlee’s reproductions. A guy in Anchorage br...

Re: Photo Album
Going through my photo album, I ran across these pictures from January 17, 2022, on the ramp at Llano, TX and a beautiful sunset flight back to Fredericksburg, after a delicious meal at Cooper’s Bar-B-Que and ice cream on the courthouse square. 5CE1EABC-2C5C-49AF-B7C2-45825E1393E0.jpeg 2C9A59FB-10B5...

Re: Tire Pressure & Tube Wear
I recently had to put a new tube in one of my 8.50-6 Smoothies due to a mesquite thorn puncture landing on a rough ranch strip. The tire/tube had been installed without talc at the last annual. When I tried to remove the flat tube from the tire, it had bonded itself to the “balance patch” inside the...

Re: cabin heater scat tube size
No matter what is decided in this matter, be sure there is a positive shut-off of the air flow from the muffler to the cabin. The original heater valve had this function and I cannot tell from the pictures if that feature was removed in the modification of the valve. It is necessary in case of fire ...

Re: Baby bushwheel on 8.5 mains?
Desser Tire and Aircraft Spruce both sell Aero Classic 8.50-6 Smooth tread tires that are very light, not expensive, and work very well on a 170 on unimproved strips. They also look “right” on a 170 and will go well with a larger tailwheel tire.

Re: Solid Axle Questions
The check can be performed simply by pulling the one upper gear bolt and disconnecting the brake line. No need to disassemble the wheel/brake/tire assembly. Then swap the gear legs and check wing height. If no change or it gets worse, swap the gear back the way it was. If the change improves the win...

Re: Solid Axle Questions
Reversing the main gear side-to-side (when symmetrical early gear are installed) can sometimes improve a wing-low condition without shimming.

Re: cabin heater scat tube size
You will notice in the picture posted in the thread about baffles by hilltop170 that the firewall cabin heat fitting/control is a later style than 1952. The scat tubes look like 2 inch but I can’t be sure. I had a complete C180 heater system installed in my 1951 170A on a 337 Field Approval here in...

Re: Dog house baffling for 170B
Does anyone have pictures of the pieces of the front portions of the Dog House baffling? No, don't take your cowling apart just for me but the Airforms pictures are not too clear. My IA has decided to reconstruct my well worn Dog House baffling and the front two pieces that go up next to the cylind...

Re: AOPA Sweepstakes aircraft: Cessna 170B
No kidding! AOPA should have done a correct restoration out of respect for the 70 year old plane, then if the new owner CHOSE to modify it, that would be an individual choice. Most of the pilots who think they are bush pilots simply because they have a prepped airplane either never fly off of paveme...
