Re: Vermont SOS
Mr. Brody, This is Steve Grimsley in Burlington, Vermont. You could have seen quite a few 170's here in Vermont during the International 170 Convention held here in Burlington and Franklin County airport this past June. I have my 170 at Morrisville airport KMVL and can show it to you and even fly if...

Re: Carb Heat box
Check with Fresno Airparts. I purchased a new one two years ago. They sill list this part but it is expensive. Current price is now $1275. It was $300 less when I bought mine. Look on page 15 of the section for C-145 engines. These are difficult to find in decent shape on the used market. You can al...

Re: Original #530852 Carb Heat Box
This is another update on this part. Suddenly Fresno Airparts listed this original part in the section for the C145/O300 engine. I found this just a couple of weeks ago and at first wasn't going to buy one as I had two used ones purchased off of Ebay. After installing my best used carb heat box I di...

Re: Original #530852 Carb Heat Box
EBAY is the best bet for this hard to find item. There were two there, one good and one repairable. I purchased both. Steve Grimsley #3204

Original #530852 Carb Heat Box
Does anyone have a source for the Continental C-145 / O-300 carburetor air box part #530852? I am in need of one and have found the new replacement for this part to be very light as compared to the one from Continental. EBAY has a couple of rough ones that look to be a potential project to make airw...

Re: What Type of Prop?
Fellas, The Airplane Specification No. A-799 document which we should all be carrying in our airplanes lists both the 1A170 DM series and the 1A172 MDM series propellers. Both of these propellers have the 8-bolt hub to fit on the older C-145 / O-300A crankshafts. The pitch for the full 76 inch diame...

Re: More Tailwheel Bracket Trouble
Cracks in the tailwheel mounting bracket #0512154-1 on the lower corners, where the U-bolt is positioned, are common for 170's operated in Alaska. This area gets much scrutiny at inspection time as I found out when I lived there. My plane was missing the aft tab on the channel #0510000-31 when first...

Re: ECI Cermi-Nil Cylinder Breakdown
Well I started this topic and now I have had my #3 ECI Titan cylinders come in very low on compression on this years annual. This was one of the four cylinders that survived my broken connecting rod engine failure at the 2013 Bardstown convention. Only 500 total hours and new rings at 209 hours. The...

Re: Control Yoke refurbishment
If you have the earlier clay colored yokes from the A model or a 1952 B model you can mix a Pittsburg paint to match the color. I have enough left to do a hundred airplanes. It last quite a while with mine now in its 17th year. See the attached photo. steve grimsley N2717D

Re: Windshield ...
The soft sealing material that you place around the plexiglass under the retaining straps will be easier to work at moderate temperatures. Will you be shooting rivets to install or do you have rivnuts and steel hardware for securing the lower strap?

Re: Delco Remy Starter Switches
Everyone, I found out later the switch wasn't the problem. I tried three different ones and still the same problem. I had a short in the starter itself going to the armature. Since I had a spare starter that runs fine I replaced the oil seals and installed it on the airplane. Everything is working p...

Delco Remy Starter Switches
The pull cable starter switch shorted out on the delco-remy original starter in my airplane. When pulling the cable to close the connection most of the current went to ground through the cable wire with the prop moving very slowly like the battery was dying. I first thought it was a bad battery befo...

ECI Cermi-Nil Cylinder Breakdown
Ron Magos told me the trouble that he has had with the ECI Titan cylinders on a freshly overhauled engine. With new cylinder units his started to pass metal very soon after first operation. The result was to completely break down his newly overhauled engine because of the wear the cylinder wall mate...
