Re: Upgrading avionics for instrument rating training in C172

I’m all for the new digital instrumentation and navigators and have equipped my plane with them. That said, I would not take anything for having earned my instrument rating in my 170 with an old school analog raw data instrument panel, ADF, and nav-com radio with glide slope. You have to have a cle...

Re: Dents forming in the wing from the sun

I had a 1950 Cessna 170 A for about 15 years. The wing was painted bright red and operated in the hot California Central Valley. Never experienced skin deformity. I hangared it in Fresno, but it would spend time parked in direct sunlight while traveling. Incidentally, does your upper skin display an...

Re: Dents forming in the wing from the sun

While waiting for input from a metal expert, some questions: Where are you located? How hot is it when the skin deforms? How much time in heat before condition? Is direct sunlight always involved? Can you or your mechanic verify this is original skin and not a section that was replaced? Unless you a...

Re: Upgrading avionics for instrument rating training in C172

I am an active CFII and had a student with a G5 equipped 182 year or so ago. He was able to eliminate his vacuum system but was unable to use the G5 to replace pitot static leaving the airplane with redundant instrumentation. This became an obstacle in developing a proper scan. So my advice is to be...

Re: Slooooooow 170b

I agree that failing to record maintenance is serious, especially for unsuspecting persons who may end up with an improperly modified aircraft and be totally unaware. I also don’t argue with FAA inspectors or other aviation professionals who have opinions and positions based on their years of experi...

Re: Slooooooow 170b

“I have been informed by FAA personnel that work performed which is un-recorded…. is regarded by the “authorities” as more onerous than work performed by uncertificated persons. (if you work on an airplane…. RECORD IT… even if you are not properly documented to perform that work. When the next Inspe...

Re: One more trip with my 170B ?

I teach my students that anxiety, in some cases fear, are healthy emotions because they can alert us to danger which, in turn helps keep us safe. We have to manage them. Your journal is actually an excellent example of effective risk management and is appreciated. As a former glider instructor and t...

Re: One more trip with my 170B ?

Thanks for your video Wolf. Your concerns as a VFR and tailwheel pilot are familiar. Your idea to have alternative routes and fuel stops makes good sense. You have a single destination but if you give yourself time, it should come together. That’s how I would do it. I have never used Windy.com but o...

Re: Tring to figure out what this item is on back middle of Piano Key

I had a 1950 Cessna 170A a few years back and it had the same device on the piano keys and wired to the landing light If I recall correctly, it was a double pole double throw switch that controlled the landing light circuit. I could be mistaken. Others more knowledgeable than me can help you with yo...

Re: How To Remove Vertical Stab?

Others may have specific advice on how to remove the vertical stabilizer. My advice is to consult with your mechanic who you trust to reinstall it. Hopefully, he will agree with your plan and support your effort while saving you money. My advice is based on past experience where technicians I know h...

Re: 0-300 NEW STYLE Accessory Case

This is an interesting story Bruce and you are to be commended for trying to help this owner, apparently in Croatia, a EU member. If the engine parts in question are OEM, then Continental is responsible for determining which engine products they are approved for use in. They should have documentatio...

Re: 0-300 NEW STYLE Accessory Case

Back to the start of this thread, it deals with a recently overhauled O300 that has a tach drive and oil pressure (?) discrepancies. First question is were these problems ever corrected or are they outstanding? Second question is who overhauled this engine and have they acknowledged responsibility f...

Re: Five weeks of adventure with my Super 170

I am happy for you that you realized at least part of your dream and did so in a really nice Cessna 170. Since you brought up you medical dilemma, I have some advice, although don’t know your entire situation. (If it’s advice you don’t need, apologize in advance) If you hold a US pilot certificate, ...
