Re: Another Leaking Gascolator Question
Someone once recommended to me that I place a little fuel lube around the leaking valve. Not sure if it was the fuel lube or just a grain of dirt finally displaced, but I have not had a leak since.

Re: Hangars in San Diego county???
Might be worthwhile to take a look at Fallbrook.

Re: Weight & Balance: Front seat, pilot and passenger
There are weight limits associated with the seats and the seat tracks they are attached to. I personally don't know what the weight limit is. I suspect the seat limit is 250 lbs. I am sure there is someone on this forum that does.

Re: attitude indicator
Check your static line filter first to insure it does not need changing - most do. Also check your static lines for any blockage such as water. Most probably an older AI with deteriorating bearings. I had a similar problem and wound up replacing the gyro.

Re: Bent tailwheel steering arm
When I was flying my Champ, for the first two weeks after purchasing it, I would ground loop either other landing. I couldn't figure out what was going on until inspecting the tailwheel spring. I discovered the leather shims had come out allowing the tailwheel spring to twist almost 445 degrees. You...

Re: Taxes and tax breaks for part time instruction
Buzzlatka - I thought about doing the same thing not to long ago and decided it was not worth it. Most cities, and I am certain Sac is no different, require that you obtain a business license and the airport will most probably require you pay for aome sort of permit to operate a business at the airp...

Takeoff Horsepower at given RPM
I am studying the Mountain and Canyon Flying Training Manual published by McCall Mountain/Canyon Flying Seminars LLC. I am trying to calculate takeoff horsepower available at different Density Altitudes. In order to this correctly I must determine what my available takeoff horsepower is at sea level...

Re: Do I need two radios?
Been away so I got into this late. I flew my champ all over the country with a handheld radio to external antennae. I used the early model Garmin 92 to help navigate. I purchased the AA battery pack for the handheld. The handheld GPS was also AA. I just carried enough AAs to get me where I was going...

Re: Safety Information
How an airplane is used should really dictate how often important attach bolts and their lock nuts are replaced. I don't believe Cessna, when they designed the 170, ever intended for the 170 to be operated like a bush plane. Operating out of unimproved fields places loads on the important attach poi...

Re: Broken Rudder Return Spring - Again
Thanks wingnut. The spring first broke in 2005 - so it has been seven years between breaks. I will get out and do the measurign you suggest. My 170, like many it seems, wants to fly left wing a little low in cruise. I have adjusted the rudder trim tab to compensate - but, it must result in constant ...

Broken Rudder Return Spring - Again
The left side rudder return spring broke again - had to hold right rudder all the home. I replaced the same spring #0310196-4 in 2005. I took Bluldr's suggestion and disconnected the rudder cable this time - much easier - but still an pain in the ... fingers. Expensive spring. Is anyone using anythi...

Re: trip from LAS to OKC
I agree with George regarding the older style spring gear. I have the older style gear on my 52 170B. I made the mistake of going to 7X6 6 ply tires - the plane never felt right. Back to 6x6 4 ply Aero Classics - the airplane feels good once again.

Refurbishing Wheels
I will be changing tires here soon and want to refurbish the wheels while I'm at it. What is the recommended method of removing the old paint? A friend suggested bead blasting the wheels, but I'm not so sure that is a good idea.
