Re: Elevator Balance

Might need to stress cherry rivets and not Cherry Max rivets. Difference being the steel stem of the Max can make things difficult if the weight needs to be removed and replaced. Brian

Re: 172's and 175's Defect Report

I posted on the MX spot but this seems to be where the action is. I have found a crack radiating upwards from the .75 hole in the 170 spar so they are not immune from this problem as well. This whole area including the fuselage attach bulkhead has alot of potential for cracks with all the motion of ...

Re: Would a 170-A fly without flaps

Bet it would. Years ago there used to be a "salvage" yard over by El Paso. "Doc" swore up and down the best way to clean the dust and dirt out of a wing after "storage" was to fly it w/o the inspection covers on. While cleaning out a wing with the water method I washed ...

Re: Tail Wheel Bearing Race removal???

Try warming the bare wheel halves in an oven to 150-200 degrees and then popping them out. The aluminum should expand more than the steel and leave the race a little more loose. Brian

Re: Back Seat Attachment Question

Just an observation, While your mechanic was doing it the " Right " way did he insist on doing a burn test on your cabin insulation at the same time? :D Sorry just had to stir the pot.

Re: Gascolator Leak

I talked to the Curtiss people at the Maintenance symposium in Phoenix and the seal is like Bruce said not an "O" ring. Also they indicated that they would like to sell the seals but up till now the FAA would not let them. Some additional hoop they had to jump thru. Hence the need to sell ...

Re: paint job - log book entry

I recently finished an annual of a 170 that was new to me but reported to be in excellent condition. Had about a 7 out of ten paint job from approx. 15 years before. I kind of figured I was in a mess when the owner said it was in great shape. Generally a bad sign. I always check for paint on the att...

Re: Installing permanent ballast?

With batteries I have found that cold is bad, warm is good and HOT is back to bad. I was having a problem with my early 185 (1961) with the battery in the back I could not transmit with my HF radio without my engine running. I got to thinking about it and concluded it might be hard to run the engine...

Re: Shop withholds aircraft from owner

Just wondering George. Since you were managing the inspection of the Baron for your client, and did not ask for a Annual insp. that you believe would throw all responsibility, morally and financially on the inspecting shop for any item missed or determined after the fact to be unairworthy.(judgement...

Re: WHOOO-HOOOOO! RAIN!

In the Sulphur Springs Valley we are probably 4 or more inches of rain below normal. Sierra Vista has done better but still low, and we are just wrapping up the monsoon season. El Nino got the blame for disrupting monsoon but should give us heavy winter rains. That is until they just announced that ...

Re: axle

After all the review and depending on how much adjustment is needed I would dress the nut contact surface before attacking the axle. That is the adjustment recommended in a torque situation involving a castleated nut. Flat even surface with sandpaper and figure 8 movements to evenly dress the contac...

Re: Not a C-170 Story

It used to be common practice for us to carry a large liquid propane tank (5ft tall) laying where the passenger seat normally sits as well a 55 gal drum of kerosene and a drum of gasoline on a supply flight. Until someone pointed out that any spillage from the propane would be liquid propane which w...

Re: L.E.D. Navigation/Strobes/Interior Lights

George, not trying to beat a dead horse, but did you determine no change in the balance by doing a balance test of the rudder or by weighing the components and finding them exactly the same? My concern is with the long arm back to the nav light it doesn't take much to throw the balance out. A light ...
