Re: "A" model rudder removal and reinstall.
I reinstalled my A rudder last year after restoration. A friend who is an AI helped me and we did use a washer as well as a drilled bolt with castellated nut and cotter pin. I found hemostats worked for getting the bolt in then my small fingers were able to hold the washer and nut in place get them ...

Re: Door Seal Retainer issue
I have an A model and just replaced my door seals, I also have the metal retainers which I decided to keep. I gently opened each one when removing the old seal, cleaned and repainted. I used the recomended "P" material as well as 1300L then folded the retainers back in place. I'm sure it w...

Re: C170 Cowl Door Pop open in Flight?
I also had a left cowl pop open a few minutes after departure in my A model, I immediatly slowed to decrease the flapping and had enough altitude to try a slip into the open side while it was comming down. I got very lucky and the door wedged between the front clyinder and the lower cowl, I continue...

Re: 1950 170A wing issue
There's also a shop in California (Ukia) that does a great job rebuilding or re skinning wings and other parts. West Coast Wings has done all of my 170's control surfaces as well as repairs to my rudder and was going to rebuild my horizontal until I got lucky and found another. He did a major repair...

Re: 170B in Merced, CA Area
Ryan, I think your idea is great! Granted I am one of those "special "owners who likes to do things right and just figures out a way to do it. I have a 170A that I started stripping for a paint job, it's now completely apart because one thing leads to another and I am a bit of a perfection...

Horizontal Tail Surface corrosion
I have my 170A completely apart for inspection, cleaning and painting and have found some significant corrosion in the horizontal stabilizer. The extent of the corrosion could not be seen until the stabilizer was removed from the aircraft, I now have the rear spar removed to allow an even better ins...

Re: elevator parts
Two years ago I replaced the torque tubes on both sides of my A model and they are very hard to find, it was to a point that we were looking at doing a modification so that we could use a B part. I called all over the country and ended up finding them at a local place. I believe Wentworth was one wh...

Another sourse for charts that I use and have found to be the best price anywhere is Fallon Airmotive in Fallon Nevada, their number is (800) 247-5506. Sectionals and WAC's are $6.95 with free shipping, they also carry other supplies. I don't know if they have a subcripion service but I just call th...

I'm also a CFI and have had my 170A for 12 years, I would be happy to help out with BFR's. I live on a private airport and do BFR's for my neighbors just for fun anyway so I think doing it for a donation to the group is a great idea. Please add my name if you are starting a list, I live in the footh...

I installed a JPI at my last overhaul and I love it, it's been great for seeing and diagnosing a problem prior to causing damage. I was told not to bother with it since the plane has been running for 50 years without one but it's already saved the cost of a new cylinder. It's also nice to be able to...

I also have the camlocks on each of my latches and really like them, they are very low profile. I had the excitement of having the left half of my cowl come open one night about 5 minutes after takeoff, I was sure the whole thing would come off and take something else out with it. It was a long flig...

We lost the primary of our two paved roads into the community for at least a couple of months and the other keeps having slides on it. The runway is in good shape so some of us are talking about relocating a car to the Placerville airport so we can make a 5 minute flight to town rather then the 45 m...

Control surface balancing
I will be in the process of re skinning all of my control surfaces and was wondering if someone knows of a good source for information on balancing for a 170A. Obviously the elevator and flaps are different then the B but are the rudder and ailerons the same?
Thanks for the help
