Re: 175 Wings

Guys, your reading to much complexity into how unusable fuel was evaluated. For our one-time STC we used the structural engineering report outlined on the STC, that we put together, along with part catalog excerpts and previous approved 337's. So the question was and is: How did we come up with our ...

Re: Aux fuel wing tanks

This process is not super difficult. When we got the one-time STC it was a simple process. Develop the FAR compliance checklist and some basic engineering and a demonstration of similarity and it was done. Getting the full blown STC is another issue. If someone has enough spare time and wanted to do...

The wing extensions are approved for the 170 in Canada only and currently not approved in the states. From what I understand approval in the states is coming shortly. Call ART and talk to Paul, he is a great guy and very knowledgable in his product. Note: The 170B was the first and primary airplane ...

Craig, A lot has passed since I started this thread in April of '03. The maker of the wingtips is Stene Aviation who has recently purchased the Sportsman STOL STC's. I guess I'll blow my horn, but "we" are working towards including the wingtips in the STC and selling the whole package for ...

With the sportsman the chord of the wing is extended by app. 2%. If I remember correctly the advertised weight gain is an additional 15 pounds.

With the Horton and VG's, are VG's added to your horizontal as well?

General Plane/Plain STOL/Floatplane Talk

Are there members out there who can comment on past experiences(any aircraft type) with different STOL kits (Horton, Robertson, Sportsman, etc.) that are available out there. I've received numerous comments on all kits during hanger talk and their positive or negative aspects including installation,...

I just received one and installing it for my 170 now. I haven't had a chance to run it but will surely pass on the information when I do. I know others who have changed them out on 185's and think it is one of the better modifications they have done.

When it comes to flying costs I'm still out there finding places in the 2.50/gal. range for avgas. I'm starting to wonder what is going to happen with autogas however. Seems to be creeping quickly past the 2.00/gal. range,

Aircraft Transition

Hey guys I was wondering if some individuals could provide some input on transitioning from a 170 to a 185. I have the oppurtunity to fly one and I'm curious what to expect with all those additional ponies up front during take-off and the additional weight when landing. Same goes for an RV-8, howeve...

Koop, I easily relate to your frustration. I have approximately 150hrs total time with about 70 in my 170B and about 80hrs total taildragger time. My first ten hours of flying with the rear on the ground I wondered if there was any hope. Today I'm very conservative with my skills, however I try to p...

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm going to go with saving my check book and investing it into my fuel tanks for awhile longer and if the temptation ever comes back maybe I'll look you up Bela.

Sportsman STOL kit

I've been observing the list for awhile now and have gained alot of useful knowledge with respect to the 170(thanks). However I'm a relative "newby" in regards to postings. Anyway I'm looking for input on STOL conversions for the 170. I've been eyeing the SPORTSMAN kit and the numbers adve...
